Skinny Bitch

by Kim Barnouin, Rory Freedman

Running Press | December 27, 2005 | Trade Paperback

Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wakeup call to all women who want to be thin. With such blunt advice as, "Soda is liquid Satan" and "You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin," it''s a rallying cry for all savvy women to start eating healthy and looking radiant. Unlike standard diet books, it actually makes the reader laugh out loud with its truthful, smart-mouthed revelations. Behind all the attitude, however, there''s solid guidance. Skinny Bitch espouses a healthful lifestyle that promotes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and encourages women to get excited about feeling "clean and pure and energized."

While I do appreciate the message of their book (that a plant-based diet is good for your body) I found the overall tone of the book to be implicitly negative and condescending. I also found they recommended a lot of processed vegan foods, I don't particularly see that as being the healthiest option, either.
If you are looking to convert to a plant-based diet, there are other books with a more uplifting tone, that are equally easy-to-understand. I would recommend "Crazy Sexy Diet" or "The Kind Diet"

I loved this book and have actually read it twice! It's really easy to relate to what they're saying! At parts where the author's were talking about all the ingredients I guess it could get boring, but the actual truth of you are what you eat, is great! I cut tons of foods out of my diet and am alot happier nd have more energy everyday! I actually fall asleep easier as well with my new diet! I would recommend this book to everyone, especially stubborn people like myself!

I ordered this book and read it in a few days. It's a condensed easy-reading book that shoots straight to the point. I love how these girls really cut through everyone's crap and self made agendas.

No matter what way you put it killing animals for food is cruel. We ALL know this and may try to convince ourselves that they are put down "humanely" and "without suffering". It's bull. They suffer. We cause this suffering. I have not eaten meat since I read the book. I wiffle waffled with vegetarianism for years and would use these excuses to enjoy chicken wings or a burger. If you choose to make a difference then you must stick to your guns.

I have read "The Atkins Diet" and applied it's principles, I have read the "Clean Eating" Diet and tried that diet. I've used "The Zone" diet and numerous other diets. I think that this book is a way of life and not a diet.

I have applied the principles of the book and although I do have some milk products occasionally I have completely obliterated meat and meat products from my food intake.

It's not easy....nothing worthwhile in life is. Bottom line - we have the choice to make a difference in the lives of others and ourselves. At least give the ideas a chance. See how you feel and then go from there. I find that most peope seem so defensive in their reviews. I think they just are in denial. I personally can not look at a slab of meat the same way. If you are so dead-set on eating meat then go kill it yourself. Maybe that will shed some light on the situation.

Everyone has the ability to apply free will. I have personally made vegetarianism a way of life for MYSELF. My family is not on the same track but I do not bully them or cajole them for what they eat. I am hoping that they will see the compassion behind my choice in general.

Oh and I have lost 10 lbs. so far just by applying the eating principles. So that is a good side note. I feel better and read every label now to see what is in the stuff I am ingesting.

I highly recommend this book. It is written with humour and just plain honesty. We can live in denial but will eventually have to face the facts sooner or later.

I hated Chapter 6, I had to skip a couple of pages because of how sick to my stomach I got. I like that these two are straight to the point and tell it like it is. I didn't like so much how they tried to push veganism, but at the end tell the readers we don't have to be vegans and do whatever we want. I will admit that after reading this book, I have gone out and bought Vegan Cookbooks just so I can live a healthier life. I will definately recommend this book to all my girlfriends who eat crap!!!!!!!

From the Critics

Hartford Courant
"…incredibly informative and entertaining… Co-authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin provide tough-love talk mixed with facts and common sense...

Freedman and Bamouin speak to the reader like a friend who isn''t afraid to tell you what''s on her mind. They back up their arguments by citing study after study and take the technical talk out of the discussion so as to make a more easily digested point.

This is the first "diet" book I''ve ever read that has made me laugh out loud numerous times. That being said, since no one warned me, I''ll let you in on a secret - the book will gross you out. In the same vein as Fast Food Nation, there are graphic descriptions of factory farming and unsanitary dairy farm practices. It was easy for me to put down Fast Food Nation but this book is so funny, I had to keep going.

Almost immediately, I was one of the transformed. In fact, as soon as I got halfway through Chapter 4, "The Dead, Rotting Decomposing Flesh Diet", I had to call and change my dinner plans because I decided to go vegan on the spot.

West VA University''s The Daily Athenaeum, 6/8/10
"a cynical, foul-mouthed read with only good intentions that could get you into your best bikini shape for this pool season…The book's conversational tone makes for an interesting and entertaining read - not simply just dos and don'ts of dieting and exercise like most weight-loss plan guides."
