Some Girls Bite: A Chicagoland Vampires Novel

by Chloe Neill

Penguin Group USA, Inc | April 1, 2009 | Trade Paperback

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student?s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn?t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit?s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker?and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she?s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan ?Lord o? the Manor? Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries? worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude? and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan?s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone?s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago?s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war?and there will be blood.

I just finished this book and have nothing but great thoughts on it. Well written, in-depth and highly interesting characters and a story to keep you engaged and wanting more.
I base a good book on many things, one being if what is written can penetrate my imagination and make me see/imagine what the author wrote for their world, and Chloe Neill did a great job of that. I could picture what was going on as I was reading which made it more interesting.
I can't wait to pick up the next book.

Some Girls Bite is a smart and fun filled premier book to the Chicagoland Vampires series. Meet Merit. She's a 27 year old beautiful, stubborn and intelligent young woman who has just been transformed into a vampire. This may have been a good deal for your average 27 year old who gets the chance at immortality, but Merit isn't one of those girls. Merit was attacked by one blood lusty and unknown creature one night then is saved and changed by another vampire, Ethan Sullivan. She has trouble seeing it as a lifesaver. Before she can come to terms with her new reality of vampirism, Merit is brought back to her home and her roommate, Mallory. In this version of Chicago, the vampires have come out of the closet, so, luckily, Merit has no secret to keep about becoming the living dead. Mallory is spunky, unique and has some wicked verbal skills. Naturally, a change to the living dead takes some time to adjust but life as a vampire isn't anymore fair. Mallory graciously accepts Merit as if there is no change, but she doesn't have as much luck with her parents. Merit comes from a selfish and "money is more important than love" upbringing and when people catch the drift of her name they seem to have an image bought and paid for. Well you know what they say about assuming. This doesn't just stop in the human world, her name and family money reputation follows her to her new vampire life. Cue the hero, Beckham look alike mixed with a bit of Eric Northman and Merit's self proclaimed saviour, Ethan. At first sight, its like a regular 4th of July fire work show. Blazing eyes, burning loins and pure hot hatred. Ethan is the Master of an organized vampire house, the one that he expects Merit to join and serve in return for saving her life. Like any mind with a sliver of common sense, Merit has trouble deciding which way to take her vampire life. Deny being a different entity with different wants and needs or embrace her new and scary life that includes having to call some doucheboat vampire, Master. That`s only the tip of the iceberg as far as Merit`s decisions and escapades go.

This is such a great intro book to a vampire series. Everything you could ask for will be thrown at you, wit, humour, action, intrigue, vampire politics galore, and (most importantly) sex with lots of foreplay type banter. Merit is a strong heroine, yet vulnerable to make her all the more endearing. The honest and charming friendship between Mallory and Merit is real to all extents. The men that enter Merit`s life along with her vampiredom, are all kinds of tasty, smart and equipped with a skilled silver tongue. I loved this book and loved the characters even more. Don`t keep this book on your TBR shelf too much longer.

Are you team Ethan, team Morgan or team Catcher? I've come across this question many times while perusing reading group discussions. I never really understood the question's implications because I had not read the 'Chicagoland Vampires' series by Chloe Neill. But just from that query alone, I came to the conclusion that this Merit chick seemed to be a little busy with a threesome of boys bidding for her attention. After finally having read the first book in the series, I now understand that my assumption about Merit and her extra-curricular activities was wrong. And I totally get why there is so much debate about the men in this series.

"Some Girls Bite" is a wonderful start to Chloe's supernatural series. Although the series focuses on the recently outed vampire population of Chicago, you still meet some shifters and sorcerers. The story is told from Merit's point of view (no last name since, unless you are a Master, vampires give up their last name upon their turning). Merit is a wonderful character. She's smart, witty and sassy. Ethan, her Master vampire, is captivating. He's over 400 years old, and it shows in his mannerisms. You really want to like him, but then he says something to Merit that makes you smack your forehead with the heel of your hand - and makes you want to smack Ethan's forehead the same way, only harder. And instead of using the heel of your hand, you want to use a rolling pin (because everyone has one of those handy while they're reading, right?!…). There is no denying the heat brewing between Merit and Ethan! Their chemistry is undeniable, even when you think there might just be another vampire who is better suited for her.

Enter the supporting cast. The secondary characters in this series are superb! Morgan (the aforementioned vampire) is yummy and funny. Catcher (a sorcerer) is just delicious. Jeff (a shifter) is a hoot. And Mallory (Merit's roommate, best friend and newly discovered sorceress) is awesome. Her interactions with Merit and their dialogue together is so well written, you feel as though you've grown up with these two. Mallory's humor is infectious and her relationship with Catcher is just right - they make a fantastic couple.

The story is strong, the world building is very smooth and not at all cumbersome and the ending leaves you open to endless possibilities. I now know and completely understand why so many of my bloggy friends are so invested in this series.

Now, to answer the question of whose 'team' I'm on… Firstly, after asking a few people I now understand that the teams do not consist of who you think Merit should end up with but of whom you think is the yummiest male character in the series. After reading "Some Girls Bite", I'll tell you this: Morgan is great, Ethan is intriguing, but it's Catcher that drew me in the most. He is funny, sexy and yummy. So it looks like I'm on team Catcher…for now. I'll re-evaluate after I finish "Friday Night Bites", the second book in the 'Chicagoland Vampires' series.

    Merit's Got Moxie!

    Kate (aka YzhaBella)

Chloe Neill has "knocked it out of the park" with this debut! Page after page, readers will be kept entertained and on their toes; just itching to find out what is going to happen next!

    Reviewers Introductory Synopsis
Merit is your basic "cheeky", yet some-what introverted, scholar. An accomplished graduate student, working as a Teachers Assistant, and a few chapters into her dissertation, life was good. Merit was happy and more than ready for the "ho hum" everyday life that is sure to follow graduation. Well, that was the plan anyway. Attacked by a nasty vampire, on campus at the University of Chicago, Merit thought her life was over. She couldn't have been more wrong!

Master Vampire, Ethan Sullivan (of Cadogan House), happened to interrupt the attack and in an effort to save her life, Ethan "turned" Merit. Even though the act of "Turning" a human must be a choice freely made, Ethan felt he had no other options. It was either create a vamp or let her die. He simply could not let an innocent victim die.

Unceremoniously "dumped" back home, Merit finds herself scared and confused at this sudden and complete redirection of her life. She's been made a vampire, removed from her enrollment with the university, and initially left with little to no guidance of what to do next.

As it happens, Merit seems to have latent ability and quickly becomes surprising handy with the Katana. So much so, that Ethan Sullivan, Cadogan House Master, assigns her the position of House Sentinel; a move that shocks every house member to the core and sends waves of speculation through their tightly knit vampiric community.

    Reviewer Thoughts
Chloe Neill has created an amazing female heroine! With determination, intelligence and even a little sass, Merit's growth as a new vampire is developed in such a way that readers are able to identify with her trials. We are lead to share her fears, feel her frustrations, and even tense with the notion of her anger. Merit's got moxie* and she's determined to do whatever it takes survive without loosing her "self" in the process.

"Merit's got lots o' moxie" and I'd love to raise my glass to her at the Temple Bar!

Some Girls Bite is the 1st novel of the Chicagoland Vampires, a series based around the female lead Merit. And yes it is just Merit which is her last name & the reader is not given her first name during the course of the story.

Merit is an unwilling recruit to the vampire House of Cadogan; Ethan the Master Vampire of the House changes her without her consent after she is mortally wounded by another vampire. She does not readily accept her new life as a vampire or the subservient role that is expected to the Master Ethan. Merit does however show amazing strength & skill especially for a new vampire & much of story revolves around her coming to terms with her new powers.

The motley crew of supernatural focal characters include vampires, sorcerers & shifters whose interactions are more often than not comprised of a comedic mix of smart, snarky & sarcastic dialogue. The romantic element of the story between Merit & Ethan is a bit complicated by the fact that they don't appear to really like each other but exhibit a mutual lust, which by itself is enough to make the reader want to explore further… so read on in 'Friday Night Bites'.

I absolutely love the main character Merrit in this book. She doesn't take crap from anyone including the vampires who turn her against her will. She accepts her fate as a vampire and does her job but still sticks up for herself.

I wasn't really sure what to think of this one. I liked it and loved Merrit but felt there could be a lot more action. That being said, by the end of the book I really wanted to go out and buy the second in this series. I'm still not in love with the series but hoping the author does a better job of developing the characters in book two.

I'm surprised that I liked this book, but I really did. The cover looked kind of like a chick lit book which usually don't care to much for, and even though it did have a little of that feel, I really enjoyed it. I really liked the main character Merit and her new vampire life. I can't wait and see whats in store in the next book. 14/1000.

This book was recommended to me by steph 1186,and I am very thankful that you did. This book is sassy, smartass and very, very sexy.

Some girls bite is the dubut novel by chloe neill. It's about 27 year old grad student merit(first and last name)! Who one night goes for a walk on campus and is attacked by a vampire who couldn't finish the job because another vampire scared him away, and not just any vampire,Ethan Sullivan, hottie and master liege of cadogan house. He has changed her and will call to her in a few days to take an oath to service the house and service him(hehe).

Merit is very conflicted because she didn't want to be changed, wasn't given an option but is very drawn to ethen and she isn't sure if it's a vamp thing or something else entirely.
With the help of her friends and housemate mallory(who by the way may be a witch) mallory's new hot boytoy, catcher a fourth leval sorcercer, jeff a shapeshifter and her grandfather merit starts to come to terms with her new life and interest in ethan.

Will all of this sexual tension be released?
Will merit end up serving the house and it's lord?
Will the vamp who tried to kill her strike again?
Read the book to find out!!! You will not be disappointed.

Some girls bite is the first of 3 books in the chicagoland series, friday night bites(book 2 just came out)with the thrid to follow.

Mallory Merit was made a vampire against her wishes, she was attacked and Ethan the head of the Cadogan House of vampires changed her to save her life. Usually people get to have a say in their change, and Merit can't quite accept what she has become. At the same time she is also finding out that her Grandfather is the Ombudsman to all things magical in Chicago. Her best friend and roommate is a newfound sorcerer. She also meets Ethan the head of her house. The good news is that they have great chemistry. The bad news, they hate each other. Merit finds that she is also very strong and fast for vampire that has not even taken the oaths. Now Merit has one week to figure out if she wants to take the oath to Ethan and the house or go Rogue. She also needs to figure out who attached her, as they are now trying to finish the job. It could be any vampire from her house or one of the other two houses in Chicago. After all, you can never trust a vampire.

This is an outstanding first book in the series. I was let wanting more, but in a great way. I found that the pace and development keep me hooked from the first chapter. I love the chemistry and tension between Merit and Ethan. Not to mention the chemistry between Merit and Morgan. Even the banter between Merit and Catcher make this one fun, sexy ride. This is now one of my top 10 favourite series.

    Neill takes a bite...

    LisaR

Neill takes a bite into the world of paranormal romance with her first book "Some Girls Bite" and she succeeds in turning this reader into a fan.

The term paranormal romance often makes me leery. I like character drive (the more broken the better) books with a good plot that allows the characters to grow without it taking over and a splash of romance. It's the perfect book-tail, in my opinion. The problem is that 'paranormal romance' often equals vampires and pages upon pages of skin friction. What was so delicious about this book is that you have that splash of romance but it's all in tension, it steers clear of some of the paranormal romance cliches.

I was talking with a friend/author the other day and we were discussing the merit (possible pun intended) of 'heat' aka tension between the two leads. How it's the tension that's the best part, all the pre-stuff to friction. Neill manages to give us snippets of what could come, dunked it five times in URST and left it at that. Take away the fabulous characters that are well developed and yet have growth to undergo, a plot that is intriguing, lore that doesn't fully follow what others have paved before and you'd still want to read book two just for the tension.

Merit is a strong female lead who does break down but doesn't get beaten down, a huge difference and she lacks that arrogant I am the best attitude, which often irks me. Ethan, an arrogant 'Master' who doesn't rule without compassion and while he feels a pull towards Merit is isn't happy about it. A best friend who's got some tricks up her own sleeve, literally. Sprinkle in some shifters, nymph and various other sups (supernaturals) and you've got a dynamic cast where each characters plays a vital role in the plot and character growth. Can't stand when random characters are tossed into a book/series just for the sake of having them.

My only issue with Neill's first book is that I didn't 100% buy Merit's skill as a swordsman. I can see how she'd defend Ethan (see above: URST) especially given that her dissertation was about Romantic Literature that makes sense (must I mention Romeo and Juliet??) but I never pictured her as overly agile and guard-esque. At the same time, she is a vampire and Neill did give us some scenes to show a contradicting personality from human-Merit to vampire-Merit. I can roll with this, as long as come book two she isn't up to Buffy skill.

I definitely cannot wait to get my hands on the second book of The Chicagoland Vampire series "Friday Night Bites", which comes out October 6, 2009.

If you enjoyed any of these: Buffy (numerous Buffy plugs in these books), Vampire Academy series, Morganville Vampire series, Twilight, Bitten, A Night Huntress series, Dark Power series... etc. then I'm sure you'll enjoy this. Especially since it's written for adult rather then teen/YA, which made it even more refreshing that come page two hundred and something it wasn't endless "their passion was uncontrollable... blah shirt rip... blah blah.

This story is about a girl named Merit, a graduate student who is attacked by a rogue vampire and left for dead. She is saved and turned without her consent by another vampire. This little detail does not go well with Merit and now she must accept her destiny and pledge allegiance to her saviour.

This book has everything I like when reading a story and in just the right amount. It has a great storyline, all the characters are interesting, great description without being boring and lots of humour. Of course a bit of sexual tension and romance but nothing really captivating in that department. The main character, Merit, is hard headed, openly speaks her mind and really kicks a$$....what's not to love. Her life is turned upside down when one night a vampire master turns her into a unhappy undead to save her life. His name is Ethan Sullivan. He is the head of Cadogan House. One of the three vampire houses of the Chicago district. She must now pledge herself to him and the house itself and believe me this does not sit too well with Merit. Add to this the fact that more girls are being attacked by supposedly rogue vamps which can now break the peace with the humans. This also pits the houses against each other and for the icing on top we have the rogues vamps who band together are also mad at being blamed for the killings. So bad time to join the fang club.

We also get to meet some of Merit's friends and associates. We have her best friend Mallory a newly discovered sorceress and a cool character in her own right. We have Catcher who is Mallory's love interest and he happens to be a top sorcerer himself. He brings a lot of humour with his wisecracking ways and add to that his partner Jeff, a shifter that changes into.....well we don't know yet. It seems Jeff as only one thing on his mind...seeing Merit naked. All of these plus the other characters from the different houses or simply from Merit's past and we have a great recipe for a truly fun read. The setting for the story is Chicago...perfect place to use the term Houses and family. It conjures up images of mafia and gangsters living by their set of rules. We even have the link to the Chicago police with a special bureau called the ombudsman's office who monitor anything supernatural. Said bureau is run by Merit's granddad an almost retired cop. Everything in this book fits in nicely. It's simply just well laid out. Nothing is for granted. It just has that great feeling of perfect balance in every aspect.

I myself cannot wait for the second in this series. I often found myself laughing or simply with a smile on my face when reading. It's one of those that you can recommend to a lot of people and you know it will be appreciated by most of them. So go ahead and have a bite.

How can you resist a book with a line like that? This is a great start to what I hope will be a long series. Chloe Neill's character, Merit, is wonderful. Turned vampire without her consent, Merit is less than thrilled with the idea, despite the fact that it was either that or die. Now, her life as a grad student is over and she has to learn a whole new set of rules. But that doesn't mean she has to like it, nor is she shy about letting everyone know it.

This is a fun, light read. Merit is witty and independent and there are some truly funny moments. I wouldn't call this action-packed, but it is well paced and you will enjoy the ride as Merit becomes initiated into her new life. My only complaint would be that the book ended too soon! But I see there is a second book coming out in Oct'09. I can hardly wait!

I just finished book one of the brand spankin new (April 2009) Chicagoland Vampires series, and if the rest are like this one, i am gonna be one happy reader in the coming years.

Author Chloe Neill introduces us to her vision of the supernatural world, where the focus is mainly on the Vampires of Chicago. In this world Vampires have revealed themselves to the human world. They are divided into Houses - although there are rogues who are exiled vamps - and follow strict rules (Canon reference guide), where the Master of each house rules and is also the only vampire allowed to create vampires. They even have a specific amount they are allowed to create. These initiates are then commended as a member of the House provided they swear to specific oaths of loyalty and allegiance to the House and Master.

First off we meet our newly turned vampire Merit - an english lit grad student in her late twenties. She is forced to become a vamp as she is attacked while crossing campus, and left for dead. Here enters Ethan Sullivan, Master Vamp of the Cadogen house, who saves her by turning her and making her a Cadoen initiate! Frome here on out, the adventure that is Merit's new life as a Cadogan vampire, begins!

Her attack seems to not be the only one happening, however, she is the only survivor. She is thrust into this world unwillingly where she struggles for a significant portion of the book with her new fate. Her new fate includes not only being allergic to the sun, but also a diet that has to include blood as well as normal food, an inability to continue her schooling as she now has no human rights anymore, and finally she has to deal with Ethan - a super sexy vamp, that causes her intense frustration. There is intense sexual tension throughout the book between Ethan and Merit, and although they both verbally assault on another, some of the funniest moments are these two bickering at each other. Ethan clearly has never had someone talk back to him before - but you can tell there are parts of him that likes her because of the challenge she brings. After long internal debates, she is commended into the Cadogan House as the House Sentinal. This means she has sworn allegiance to Ethan and more specifically to the safety and protection of the House, but that she can still retain a little bit of her rebellious nature that clearly irritates Ethan. As Sentinal she is thrust into the world of politics, rights, and potential impending war between the houses/vamps, with the humans, and the other supernaturals. This book tries to figure out who is responsible for the attacks and threatening their already fragile peace.

Other than Ethan and Merit, the supporting cast in the book includes Mallory, Merit's roommate and best friend who finds out that she can yield powerful magic a la wizard, Catcher who is an ex-communicated from the union wizard who is not only teaching Merit how to fight, but also canoodling with Mallory - all while teaching her how to use her magic of course, Jeff - a shifter, Lindsay - a new vamp friend introduced during commendation, Merit's sweet grandfather who loves her to pieces all while also being the Ombusman for the supernatural world/human world relations, and I cannot forget Morgan - the second in command for the Navarre House that has his eye on Merit. There are other characters (Celina, Merit Family, Luc, and so on) but the ones described above are the ones that are the most memorable and the ones i hope to see a lot of in future books.

This book contains some hilarious scenes. The comedic relief is not lacking and is one of the best parts of reading this book. Merit is clearly bitter about the being a vampire, and does not hesitate to let everyone, especially Ethan hear about it. She is a strong fierce woman and does not take to taking orders and to a life of servitude as she calls it, very well. Her frustration with her unwanted attraction to Ethan is funny too - although its mutual!!! Mallory is also a great character, and is quite funny herself - especially when Catcher enters the picture. Catcher is a hard ass that is super blunt about everything - except his secrets, but terribly funny with some of his comments, and you have to love all the moments where he plays a part.

Overall, this is not an action packed thrill ride, not an epic, not a groundbreaking story, but rather a hilarious with dramatic moments story of a girl forced into a new world she was not prepared for. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was entertaining, and i honestly wish the next chapter in Merit's life would come out before the fall. I will be a loyal reader of this series if Neill can keep writing like this. Incredibly easy and enjoyable to read. My favourite kind of Fluff!!!!!!!!!

    Enjoy!

This debut novel by Chloe Neill is not only action packed, it's hilarious. I couldn't put it down, I finished it in hours and jumped online right away to see when book two was out (October 6th, according to Amazon).

In a world where Vampire's have just came out of the "closet", Merit is attacked by a Rogue Vampire on her way home from University. Ms. Neill's writing is hilarious and her character's extremly charming. You can't help but love Merit and her determination to continue on as if she is still human.

Merit is the daughter of an extremly rich jerk of a father, who blames Merit for being attacked by a rouge and only worried about what negativity it will bring him. Merit on the other hand, doesn't really want anything to do with her family or the family name that she uses as a first name (you never do find out her first name).

Don't be fooled by the description of this book! I was either on the edge or laughing hysterically! There is so much going on and so many extremely interesting characters that you will not want to put this one down! The only drawback to the book is that your left hanging wanting so much more at the end of the book, and anticipating the second (which is not due to release till October 2009)
