Some Girls Bite: A Chicagoland Vampires Novel

by Chloe Neill

Penguin Group USA, Inc | April 1, 2009 | Trade Paperback

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student?s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn?t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit?s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker?and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she?s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan ?Lord o? the Manor? Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries? worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude? and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan?s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone?s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago?s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war?and there will be blood.

I just finished this book and have nothing but great thoughts on it. Well written, in-depth and highly interesting characters and a story to keep you engaged and wanting more.
I base a good book on many things, one being if what is written can penetrate my imagination and make me see/imagine what the author wrote for their world, and Chloe Neill did a great job of that. I could picture what was going on as I was reading which made it more interesting.
I can't wait to pick up the next book.

Some Girls Bite is a smart and fun filled premier book to the Chicagoland Vampires series. Meet Merit. She's a 27 year old beautiful, stubborn and intelligent young woman who has just been transformed into a vampire. This may have been a good deal for your average 27 year old who gets the chance at immortality, but Merit isn't one of those girls. Merit was attacked by one blood lusty and unknown creature one night then is saved and changed by another vampire, Ethan Sullivan. She has trouble seeing it as a lifesaver. Before she can come to terms with her new reality of vampirism, Merit is brought back to her home and her roommate, Mallory. In this version of Chicago, the vampires have come out of the closet, so, luckily, Merit has no secret to keep about becoming the living dead. Mallory is spunky, unique and has some wicked verbal skills. Naturally, a change to the living dead takes some time to adjust but life as a vampire isn't anymore fair. Mallory graciously accepts Merit as if there is no change, but she doesn't have as much luck with her parents. Merit comes from a selfish and "money is more important than love" upbringing and when people catch the drift of her name they seem to have an image bought and paid for. Well you know what they say about assuming. This doesn't just stop in the human world, her name and family money reputation follows her to her new vampire life. Cue the hero, Beckham look alike mixed with a bit of Eric Northman and Merit's self proclaimed saviour, Ethan. At first sight, its like a regular 4th of July fire work show. Blazing eyes, burning loins and pure hot hatred. Ethan is the Master of an organized vampire house, the one that he expects Merit to join and serve in return for saving her life. Like any mind with a sliver of common sense, Merit has trouble deciding which way to take her vampire life. Deny being a different entity with different wants and needs or embrace her new and scary life that includes having to call some doucheboat vampire, Master. That`s only the tip of the iceberg as far as Merit`s decisions and escapades go.

This is such a great intro book to a vampire series. Everything you could ask for will be thrown at you, wit, humour, action, intrigue, vampire politics galore, and (most importantly) sex with lots of foreplay type banter. Merit is a strong heroine, yet vulnerable to make her all the more endearing. The honest and charming friendship between Mallory and Merit is real to all extents. The men that enter Merit`s life along with her vampiredom, are all kinds of tasty, smart and equipped with a skilled silver tongue. I loved this book and loved the characters even more. Don`t keep this book on your TBR shelf too much longer.

    Merit's Got Moxie!

    Kate (aka YzhaBella)

Chloe Neill has "knocked it out of the park" with this debut! Page after page, readers will be kept entertained and on their toes; just itching to find out what is going to happen next!

    Reviewers Introductory Synopsis
Merit is your basic "cheeky", yet some-what introverted, scholar. An accomplished graduate student, working as a Teachers Assistant, and a few chapters into her dissertation, life was good. Merit was happy and more than ready for the "ho hum" everyday life that is sure to follow graduation. Well, that was the plan anyway. Attacked by a nasty vampire, on campus at the University of Chicago, Merit thought her life was over. She couldn't have been more wrong!

Master Vampire, Ethan Sullivan (of Cadogan House), happened to interrupt the attack and in an effort to save her life, Ethan "turned" Merit. Even though the act of "Turning" a human must be a choice freely made, Ethan felt he had no other options. It was either create a vamp or let her die. He simply could not let an innocent victim die.

Unceremoniously "dumped" back home, Merit finds herself scared and confused at this sudden and complete redirection of her life. She's been made a vampire, removed from her enrollment with the university, and initially left with little to no guidance of what to do next.

As it happens, Merit seems to have latent ability and quickly becomes surprising handy with the Katana. So much so, that Ethan Sullivan, Cadogan House Master, assigns her the position of House Sentinel; a move that shocks every house member to the core and sends waves of speculation through their tightly knit vampiric community.

    Reviewer Thoughts
Chloe Neill has created an amazing female heroine! With determination, intelligence and even a little sass, Merit's growth as a new vampire is developed in such a way that readers are able to identify with her trials. We are lead to share her fears, feel her frustrations, and even tense with the notion of her anger. Merit's got moxie* and she's determined to do whatever it takes survive without loosing her "self" in the process.

"Merit's got lots o' moxie" and I'd love to raise my glass to her at the Temple Bar!
