by Emily Giffin
As told by: Emily Giffin

St. Martin's Press | April 1, 2005 | Trade Paperback

The smash-hit debut novel for every woman who has ever had a complicated love-hate friendship.

Rachel White is the consummate good girl. A hard-working attorney at a large Manhattan law firm and a diligent maid of honor to her charmed best friend Darcy, Rachel has always played by all the rules. Since grade school, she has watched Darcy shine, quietly accepting the sidekick role in their lopsided friendship. But that suddenly changes the night of her thirtieth birthday when Rachel finally confesses her feelings to Darcy''s fiance, and is both horrified and thrilled to discover that he feels the same way. As the wedding date draws near, events spiral out of control, and Rachel knows she must make a choice between her heart and conscience. In so doing, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren''t always neat, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

Think Sex in the City but with More Soul

Something Borrowed is the story of a smart young woman in New York who falls in love with her best friend's fiancé. Instead of not liking her, which I might be expected to do, I found myself totally rooting for her. This book will never be confused with a great literary endeavour but you will have a blast reading it. It is a breezy, romantic, happily-ever-after story. Think Sex in the City but with more soul, more intelligence. Go for it!

    Great Light Read

After seeing and loving the movie, my friend recommended that I read the book. So I happily dove in. The thing I love about this book is that although the rational part of your brain is telling you that taking Rachel's side is morally wrong, I found myself on Rachel's side from the get go. The book was a light and quick read. A perfect beach read or way to spend your sunday curled up on the couch. As far as chick-lit goes I love this.

    A Good, Light Story

I needed a light, easy read and this book delivered. However it wasn't so light that it was boring, I found it to be quite the page turner at times.
I liked the characters and related to Rachel (only in the way that we suffer from being goody-two-shoes) and I liked that she progressed, she got some attitude near the end of the book.
Overall I really liked it and I am considering reading the next book in the series.

I got this book as a gift for my birthday 3 years ago and decided to give it a try. I was never interested by that kind books and I always read fantasy or Sci-Fi.

''Something Borrowed'' was fun to read. I went from laughing to crying and I just coudn't put it down.

    Very good book!

I liked this one but not as much as Sth Blue. I felt like more happened in the 2nd one but this one was good too as it introduces the characters, the main events and the friendship relationships between the characters.

Giffin does an amazing job at writing a pleasant love story with such a moral dilemma. She captures the humanity and complexity of falling in love. Sometimes it doesn't happen like a fairy tale, sometimes it's complex, and most times you can't help who you fall in love with or the circumstances in which falling in love can occur. This book captures the essence of those complexities in a lighthearted way. And if you give the sequel a try (which I highly recommend), you'll find hope that there's someone out there for anyone....even Darcy and also find faith in forgiveness. I also felt that there was a greater lesson to learn on friendship rather than love in both books.

A nice lighthearted read, not to be taken so literally but to ponder 'what if's' and the consequences of the decisions made because of them.

    Review First Published at http://unautrehistoire.blogspot.com/

I picked this up a couple weeks ago and read it immediately (which doesn't happen often/ever). But the movie had come out and I wanted to read the book before seeing the film. I was excited about the movie because the trailer, which I dedicated a post to. Anywho.. I haven't seen the movie and I am not sure that I will, now that I have read the book. I was not at all happy with this book.

First let me say. It was pretty boring. The main character-Rachel- is a work-aholic 30 year old single woman, who hates her job. Yeah that sounds like buckets of fun. So the story starts out with Rachel's best friend Darcy throwing her a birthday party. Where Darcy is, Dex is. Who is Dex? Dex is Darcy's fiance who she met through Rachel and whom Rachel is secretly in love with, and has been for a while. Darcy goes home early from the party due to extreme drunkenness. Dex and Rachel end up leaving the party together to go to another bar and end up in bed together later that night. Poor Darcy.

So up till this point I was fairly entertained with Something Borrowed. I went on reading thinking that I was going to read a funny account of how Rachel was going to have to keep this indiscretion from Darcy, and the awkwardness between her and Dex. But that is not what I got. What I got was a full blown affair between Dex and Rachel. Complete with sneaking around and lies. I was horrified. Did I mention that Rachel is supposed to be the Maid of Honour at their wedding. I am in no way a prude. But I found the plot to be terrible. Really. I am not a fan of infidelity, and I definitely don't like when it's glorified. I feel like this book totally glorified affairs. Especially in the end.

I probably could have handled this book if there was a bit more humour involved. But there wasn't any. There were no laugh out loud moments. I did not like Emily Giffin's writing. It lacked character. For me it was flat and emotionless. I found her character's incredibly selfish. Dex was a putz. I DID NOT him. Not at all. He was whiny and the most selfish man I have ever read about. I shake my head at the thought of him.

I guess, in the end I did not like this book, and I am sad that I read it. The only reason I finished it was because I wanted to know how the two got busted. It was a waste of time. The writing was bad, the plot was bad, the characters were bad. I will not be reading Something Blue or anything else by Emily Giffin.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was funny and Rachel's character was so relatable. I'm looking forward to reading the other books by Emily Giffin.

I was really into this book. It is filled with drama, although I am not one for drama. I immediately wanted to read the next book - Something Blue. I am now on her other book, Baby Proof.

I just finished this book and usually this wouldn't be my choice of genre but I have to say that i'm pleased that I did take the opportunity to read it. The story was well written and I found myself able to relate to the characters.. the novel gets you to think twice about what you really think is right and what is wrong... The novel itself took the time to develop each character .. like everyone said the ending was a big rushed but very action packed. Looking forward to the next.

I had no intention of reading this book, but after I couldn't find any good reads I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did. It was absolutely wonderful. The ending was a bit rushed, but how often do you find a book that's one hundred percent perfect? I can't wait to read the next by Emily Giffin.

This is the first book I have read by Emily Giffin so I wasn't sure what to expect. I really enjoyed the book. Nice light summertime reading. Can't wait now to read Something Blue.

When I first started reading this book, I thought it was very well-written and I could really picture the characters. When I got into the crux of the story and finished the book, I think I was a bit uncomfortable with the subject matter. I didn't feel sorry for the heroine at all, even though she makes you want to feel sorry for her. Even though her friend was the victim, I hated her for being so shallow. The whole thing reminded me of high school drama (fighting over a guy that your friend is dating) and these characters are all seemingly in their late twenties or early thirties.
The sequel, Something Blue, is the continuation of the story from the victim's perspective, and while I was sympathetic to the victim in that book, I was annoyed with her there as well as in this book.

    Expect the Unexpected

    Hiril Isilme

Don't think you know what's going to happen after reading the back cover. Before you read this book, do not assume that you know what's going to happen. You love who you're supposed to hate, and hate who you're supposed to love. This book makes the reader look at life in a totally different prespective, think deeply about the values of friendship and decide what the real story is.

    Expect the unexpected.

Like everyone else, when I read the description of this book I thought, "I'm going to hate this girl." But by the end I found myself cheering for Rachel, knowing that she wasn't a bad person, she was just in a bad situation. There's a quote from a review on the book cover that says you don't have to lust after your best friend's guy to enjoy this story, and it's so true. If you've ever been in an unequal friendship, if you've ever been the underdog, if you've ever come so close to and then lost something you wanted, you'll totally get this book.

This book is full of clichés. I think like the majority of people I decided to read the book due to its reviews. Although the beginning was entertaining, the author lost my attention when the plot turned out to be dull, predictable, and cheesy. As per my opinion Griffin should of remained a lawyer.

Loved this book! I'm not usually into novels, but after quite a few people recommended it to me, gave it a try. It's one of those books you hate to love! I think that it was very well balanced, and kept me very entertained!

I bought this book due to its great reviews and numerous recommendations. While the description and title are quite interesting, the plot is what I would call "stale". The story is very cliche and quite predictable. I have read a number of books with the same story line which made this novel very dull and unoriginal. The heroine of this novel is selfish, deceitful, and not worthy of a friend. The supporting characters are very boring and had absolutely no personality. I found that half the book consisted of the heroine babbling on about her past, in an attempt to make the readers feel sorry for her and eventually dislike her best friend Darcy. A great story usually reaches out to me but "Something Borrowed" did not evoke any emotions from within me at all. I have only finished reading the book last night and as of this moment, I have pretty much forgotten the events and characters in the novel. That's how much I didn't care for the story at all. I picked up "Something Blue" at the same time I got "Something Borrowed" but I doubt I will be reading the sequel anytime soon, if at all.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I can't wait for the next installment "Something Blue". I must admit that I didn't really like the main character - as she was the other woman. I felt she was justifying her own poor judgement. However, the book kept me interested from the first page until the last.

This is the first Emily Giffin novel I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, staying up way too late to finish it the day I started it. It's easy to read and well paced. I recommend it to any 'thirtysomething' woman.
