Something Borrowed

by Emily Giffin

Renaissance Books | March 29, 2011 | Audio Book (CD)

Rachel has always been a good girl--until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend Darcy throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiance Dex. Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for Dex. She prays for fate to intervene, but when she makes a choice she discovers that the lines between right and wrong are blurry, endings aren't always neat, and you have to risk all to win true happiness.

Think Sex in the City but with More Soul

Something Borrowed is the story of a smart young woman in New York who falls in love with her best friend's fiancé. Instead of not liking her, which I might be expected to do, I found myself totally rooting for her. This book will never be confused with a great literary endeavour but you will have a blast reading it. It is a breezy, romantic, happily-ever-after story. Think Sex in the City but with more soul, more intelligence. Go for it!

    All women will enjoy!

A true “chick-lit”, this light and easy to follow novel is perfect for a quick read, or as I read my copy, on a weeklong camping trip. This novel is a fun, emotional, and makes you think about where your priorities lie. When the main character realizes her true feelings for her best friend’s fiancé, Emily Griffins writing leaves you wanting to turn the next page to find out what will happen to the characters next. A great read for teens right up to adults, this story asks the audience, which could you live with breaking, friendship or true love?

    Great Light Read

After seeing and loving the movie, my friend recommended that I read the book. So I happily dove in. The thing I love about this book is that although the rational part of your brain is telling you that taking Rachel's side is morally wrong, I found myself on Rachel's side from the get go. The book was a light and quick read. A perfect beach read or way to spend your sunday curled up on the couch. As far as chick-lit goes I love this.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was funny and Rachel's character was so relatable. I'm looking forward to reading the other books by Emily Giffin.

About the Author

Emily Giffin was born March 20, 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended high school in Naperville, Illinois, where she was a member of a creative writing club and served as editor-in-chief for the school's newspaper. She earned her undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University, where she also served as manager of the basketball team, the Demon Deacons. She then attended law school at the University of Virginia. After graduating in 1997, she moved to Manhattan and worked in the litigation department of Winston & Strawn. But Giffin soon determined to seriously pursue her writing. In 2001, she moved to London and began writing full time. Her first young adult novel, Lily Holding True, was rejected by eight publishers. Giffin began a new novel, then titled Rolling the Dice, which became the bestselling novel Something Borrowed. In 2002 she signed a two-book deal with St. Martin's Press. While doing revisions on Something Borrowed, she found the inspiration for a sequel, Something Blue. Something Borrowed was released spring 2004. It received positive reviews and made the extended New York Times bestsellers list. Something Blue followed in 2005, and in 2006, her third, Baby Proof, made its debut. Giffin spent 2007 finishing her fourth novel. The next three novels were international bestsellers, and appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List, among many others. The three appeared simultaneously on USA Today 's Top 150 list. Something Borrowed and Something Blue have been optioned for film. Her recent release is entitled Heart of the Matter and was published in 2010.
