The Space Between Us: A Novel: A Novel

by Thrity Umrigar

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | January 5, 2006 | Hardcover

Each morning, Bhima, a domestic servant in contemporary Bombay, leaves her own small shanty in the slums to tend to another woman's house. In Sera Dubash's home, Bhima scrubs the floors of a house in which she remains an outsider. She cleans furniture she is not permitted to sit on. She washes glasses from which she is not allowed to drink. Yet despite being separated from each other by blood and class, she and Sera find themselves bound by gender and shared life experiences.

Sera is an upper-middle-class Parsi housewife whose opulent surroundings hide the shame and disappointment of her abusive marriage. A widow, she devotes herself to her family, spending much of her time caring for her pregnant daughter, Dinaz, a kindhearted, educated professional, and her charming and successful son-in-law, Viraf.

Bhima, a stoic illiterate hardened by a life of despair and loss, has worked in the Dubash household for more than twenty years. Cursed by fate, she sacrifices all for her beautiful, headstrong granddaughter, Maya, a university student whose education -- paid for by Sera -- will enable them to escape the slums. But when an unwed Maya becomes pregnant by a man whose identity she refuses to reveal, Bhima's dreams of a better life for her granddaughter, as well as for herself, may be shattered forever.

Poignant and compelling, evocative and unforgettable, The Space Between Us is an intimate portrait of a distant yet familiar world. Set in modern-day India and witnessed through two compelling and achingly real women, the novel shows how the lives of the rich and the poor are intrinsically connected yet vastly removed from each other, and vividly captures how the bonds of womanhood are pitted against the divisions of class and culture.

"This is a thoughtful novel with beautifully drawn characters that live on after the book is closed. The author has succeeded in showing us that class consciousness and role expectations may be more rigid in Indian society, but all of us labor under those same constraints."

"In The Space Between Us ... Umrigar holds a mirror to the disparity that is India, and forces us to look."

"Umrigar has created a clear picture of the emotional turmoil as each woman grapples with what she feels and the "appropriate" social roles she has been alotted that grabs your heart. It is more than a book about social caste in India. It transcends country and race to ask the larger question: does opening your heart to unconditional love automatically lead to betrayal?"

"This intimate, quiet look at a household in India wraps the reader up in an engaging story. Few books provide a better window into another culture -- and into the lives of the characters. From the earliest pages in the book, the scenery and details touched on all senses. The story was moving, heart-breaking, heart-warming, and touching."

"By telling the stories of the present and the past of these two women and their families, the author shows how culture affects all pieces of their lives. In an ending that tears apart the hearts and souls of both women, it still leads the way for redemption and future satisfaction for one of them."

"The Space Between Us kept me engaged to the point where I would want to get to bed early just to be able to read! The characters became very real as did the sights, sounds (and smells) of Bombay."

"I was blown away by the depth of the characters and the descriptiveness of her phrasing. I haven't read a book set in India that has grabbed hold of me and transported me across the globe like this one did, since I read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry a few years back."

"Impossible to set aside, the raw emotional power of The Space Between Us will haunt readers for long afterward. Rarely has a book so painfully involved its readers in the lives of such diverse characters: the impoverished slum dwelling servant in modern Bombay and her wealthy employer of many years. An amazing novel with enormous weight."

"What an incredible and moving story. The complexities and emotion are amazing, the unfolding tale of what these women, Sera and Bhima, experience and go through, is riveting and not to be missed. What a wonderful look into a different culture and way of life. Highly recommend!"

"When critics describe a book as a "page-turner" they are usually writing about a novel belonging to the crime or espionage genre. Thrity Umrigar's The Space Between Us falls in neither category, but it is a "page-turner" of the highest quality. Artfully blending the key elements of plot, setting, character, and theme to create a compelling story of modern Bombay, Umrigar presents the story of two women who are miles apart in class yet bound together by a shared past. The space between them widens and narrows as circumstances and fate require, drawing both the characters and the reader along an emotional path that culminates in a truly haunting conclusion."

"Thrity Umrigar takes us to Bombay and shows us that class is always the elephant in the middle of the room, often standing in the way of true friendship. This was a good novel, one that I would recommend to others. I found it well written and thought provoking."

"What a charming story between the classes. Umigar does a great job of developing the characters in such a way you truly feel for both Sera and Bhima. Even with the class difference between the two women their lives are very much alike, and the author does a good job of showing that."

"I loved this book from first page to the end. The women, Sera & Bhima, their lives, homes & surroundings, I could picture all this in my mind. My heart ached for Bhima. I was surprised at the twist in the end. I would recommend this to book clubs as well."

"The Space Between Us is the finest kind of novel -- moving without being sentimental, realistic but not without humor and grace. Thrity Umrigar reveals her characters in their entirety, neither saints, devils nor victims, but real, multifaceted and complicated women. I highly recommend The Space Between Us to other book groups, and will urge my group to consider it for next year's book list."

"An amazing, brilliant, heart-tugging novel of life, love, joy and sorrow, pain, prejudice and struggle. Umrigar sweeps you into the impoverished world of Bhima, who has spent nearly her entire adult life working for the Dubash family. Throughout their ups and downs, they maintain a hesitant understanding till a surprising betrayal leads to the novel's shocking and yet beautifully uplifting ending. I was blown away by this book, its characters and the revealing peek into another culture. An absolutely breathtaking book that I'll recommend to everyone."

"The Space Between Us is an incredible read. Its characters and story are so lush I will read it again and again. I loved the use of language, the settings and the story. I wanted so much for it not to end so I might be with the characters to their end. I heartily recommend this book."
