Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers | September 21, 2004 | Paper over Board

It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: "We just want people to know about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone." Little could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures. The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn''t leave this one!

Spiderwick is a delightful little book about fairies. Not Tinkerbell and other happy creatures, but the real kind that live in everyone's garden. Bogart's and brownies and elves and the rest as well, and not all of them are helpful or particularly happy.
This book is a wonderful pick for reluctant readers, especially older children who don't want to be patronized. The read itself isn't overly difficult, and scattered throughout are pictures, describing various scenes from the book. The pictures however are so detailed that they add visuals to the story and are stylistic without being childish. Little to no space is used to describe landscapes or appearances of creatures or characters because "a picture is worth a thousand words." By using pictures the story moves much quicker and cuts out much of the descriptive filler that can make other titles more tedious for reluctant readers.
A beautiful series all around. If you get through this one and want something along similar lines, please check out the other books I've recommended below.

I'm looking forward to this series. I find books so much more entertaining than the movies adaptations. Definitely on my to get list!
