Star Wars: Riptide

by Paul S. Kemp

Random House Publishing Group | October 25, 2011 | Mass Market Paperbound

Anyone can escape danger. No one can escape the truth.

When a ship full of Sith warriors arrived in Galactic Alliance space, the fight to destroy it accidentally uncovered a hidden menace: a long-hidden group of clones, secretly created as insidious weapons capable of wielding the Force and heedless of the differences between light side and dark side. Now the clones have escaped-and evidence suggests that they are flawed by genetic disease and violent madness.

Jedi Knight Jaden Korr pursues the clones, hoping to heal them but prepared to destroy them. What he doesn't know is that Sith agents are hot on his heels, determined not only to recover the clones for their Master but to capture Jaden for their own dark-side purposes. In a life-or-death battle, Jaden will confront a shocking reality that will rock him to his core and bring him face-to-face with the question of what makes a man . . . and a Jedi.

Jedi, enraged clones, a hidden secret and a terrible threat, what could go wrong? Unfortunately, a lot can go wrong, it seems; Riptide is just like it's precedetor, Crosscurrent. The story was hazzy at the beginning but started to smooth itself out and then became part of Kessel's landscape. The characters are well depicted, the storyline is well plotted but in terms of writting and continuity, the book just falls to dust.

Still chasing after the mad clones of fallen Jedi and Sith alike, Jaden Korr finds himself a Master to a potencial Jedi, Marr. A chase amongst the stars themselves will lead three unlikley groups to the heart of Evil itself.

The story of Riptide holds promise, but I am not sure that it was carried out to it's fullest potential. Just like in Crosscurrent, I found myself wanting more than what was given. At times, the words just seem to drone on without meaning, whitout purpose and it made me wonder: why is that there?

On the whole, Riptide is not a terrible book; I found it more satisfying that Paul S. Kemp's other Star Wars novels (Crosscurrent - Deceived). Again, I had the feeling that the author was writting for the sake of writting and not putting is best effort into his work. Perhaps Star Wars and he don't mix well. There is no doubt that Mr. Kemp can write; but I'm not sure that Star Wars is the way to go.
