Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook

by Debbie Stoller

August 6, 2004 | Trade Paperback

Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis. In Stitch ''n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch ''n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch ''n Bitch group.

Beginner to expert. I found so much info in this book. In fact I loan it to friends who are learning to know. Very hip and fun!

I have recently re-taught myself how to knit and purchased this book as a basic stitch guide. I got so much more than just a how-to book! This book is hip! It is cool! It is a great read and a wonderful stitch guide with projects for every level. From scarves to cable sweaters, this is a must for all those who wish to create with sticks and wool!

My mother recently re-taught me the basic knitting stitch, so I decided to pick up The Knitter's Handbook to guide me through everything else. I'm amazed at how much information is in this book...in a couple of hours I taught myself how to cast on, purl, bind off and do a few other nifty tricks. There's an abundance of info on tools, the history of the craft, tips of the trade and enough funky patterns to get you well on the way to becoming a knitter. A very modern and helpful book for beginning knitters...I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn to knit or for more experienced knitters who are looking for some great tips/patterns.

This book is comprehensive yet fun!! It covers all the knitting basics & then some & then throws in some funky projects for you to make. I am very impressed by the pictures, basic instructions & information about needle gauge & direction on how to correct those unavoidable knitting mistakes we all make from time to time. I would definitely reccommend this book to any fellow knitter for its wit, charm & simplicity.

Debbie Stoller is bringing knitting to a whole new generation. Goodbye tea cozies and hello knitted bikinis! If you are an experienced knitter looking for some cool patterns or a beginner looking for a simple explanation of the mechanics of knitting: this book does it all. Stoller's easy to read style and sense of humor come through in this book and you will be knitting some up-to-date creations in no time.

This book was so terrible I had to return it. As a person who has never knit in my life I was recommended this book by the girl at Chapters. It was definitely not comprehensive, I could not even understand how to cast the stiches on, let alone knit. For some this book may be great, but for someone that is initially learning...I would not recommend. I returned it and went out and bought Knitting For Dummies which is absolutely fantastic and geared more toward the beginner knitter.

    Kick-a** knitting reference!

This book was such a great buy for a beginner knitter like myself... and perhaps for you. I'd already knew how to crochet and wanted to learn how to knit, but I had always been a little intimidated by my perception of the complexities of knitting. This book makes knitting really accessable by its humour, colourful pictures and creative patterns. The only drawback are the sometimes hard-to-follow and not-so-clear pictures. Despite this minor downside, I was knitting, purling and doing intarsia within a week by following the easy directions.

if you are a beginner or have been knitting forever, this is a great book to have...it is a great resource as it has information and diagrams about different stitches and techniques but it is a full of interesting stories from knitters about their own experiences, unique and common to all of us who like to play w/ sticks and string..it would make a great present for any knitter on your list AND it is quite resonably priced!
