by Guillermo Del Toro

The Strain: Book One Of The Strain Trilogy is rated 4.625 out of 5 by 8.

At New York''s JFK Airport, an arriving Boeing 777 taxiing along a runway suddenly stops dead. All the shades have been drawn, all communication channels have mysteriously gone quiet. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of a CDC rapid-response team investigating biological threats, boards the darkened plane--and what he finds makes his blood run cold.

A terrifying contagion has come to the unsuspecting city, an unstoppable plague that will spread like all-consuming wildfire--lethal, merciless, hungry . . . vampiric. And in a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, an aged Holocaust survivor knows that the war he has been dreading his entire life is finally here.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country. In two months . . . the world.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Too Straining of a Read The Strain is a great, action packed vampire novel. But these aren't your daughters vampires who 'sparkle' in the sun. These are serious vampires, who are ugly, scary as hell and just looking to kill you, suck your blood and turn you. I really loved the action in this book, but I didn't get into the characters. I didn't really care about any of the characters too much until the 3rd book (the best in the trilogy). I just found them a little bland and missing...I don't know, just something to hold me to them. The vampires in this series are way cool - they have these weird tongues that shoot out and get you that way. The vampire origin story is pretty cool too (but I think you might not find that out until book 3). This book (and I feel weird saying this) would be better as a movie. Perhaps it's because it's co-written by Guillermo Del Toro, who is a pretty awesome director. I do hope the make this into a film - it would be awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! I happened upon this book in the airport during a stopover. I thought it would keep me busy for awhile. Well it turned out to do more than that. As with most books, the first few chapters are a little slow, but after that it took off. I literally had to force myself to put this book down. I really enjoyed this book and was a little sad when I finished it because I had to wait for book 2. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A terrorific book!!! Awesome reworking of vampires in today's world. Amazing quick read that had me not sleeping for a few days. These are vampires are not glamorous but mean, smelly and ugly. The theory behind vampirism even sounds plausible in science. I cannot wait to read the second book and watch the movie adaptation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can't put this book down! I wasn't expecting it to be this good, but it was amazing! Great detail, action packed, I couldn't wait to see what happens! The frist few chapters are a little dry but they only make you want to read more to make sense of it all. I was actually scared at a few points, I loved it and can not wait for the next one out in september and the one after!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! This book is awesome! Although a little slow at the beginning, it quickly picks up by chapter 4. After that, you can really see how Del Toro and Hogan really shapes the characters of the book. It reads just like a movie. I totally recommend this book, a perfect book for Halloween or if you want a good scary book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from an amazing chiller thriller horror fest! This novel was amazing! I wasa waiting for months for this novel to come out; and i couldnt of asked for a better read, if i could i would give this 10 stars instead of five! It is the begining of a earth shaking disaster of epic porportions! It is a whole new take on vampire horror stories and fans of many genres will be surprised, chilled, stunned and delighted when they open up this masterpiece! I would recomend this very highly top one and all! The recomended similar titles are of the same genre but they dont come close to how great this novel is, nothing does!
