Peter Hennessy, a passionate advocate of educational reform, gives us a radical vision of a system that would energize students, free them from monotony and repetition, and treat each student as a citizen rather than "citizen-in-waiting".

Many parents, teachers and students will agree enthusiastically with his criticisms of homework, standardized testing, and standardized report cards to name only a few defects of the system now in place.

His account of his own teaching experience and his own mistakes make this not only a wry, entertaining read, but will give re-assurance and courage to all those who think outside the box. From Student to Citizen: A Community-Based Vision for Democracy is a must-read.
