The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness

by Simon Wiesenthal

Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group | April 7, 1998 | Trade Paperback

While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was taken one day from his work detail to the bedside of a dying member of the SS. Haunted by the crimes in which he had participated, the soldier wanted to confess to--and obtain absolution from--a Jew. Faced with the choice between compassion and justice, silence and truth, Wiesenthal said nothing.  But even years after the way had ended, he wondered: Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place?

In this important book, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal''s questions. They are theologians, political leaders, writers, jurists, psychiatrists, human rights activists, Holocaust survivors, and victims of attempted genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, China and Tibet. Their responses, as varied as their experiences of the world, remind us that Wiesenthal''s questions are not limited to events of the past.  Often surprising and always thought provoking, The Sunflower will challenge you to define your beliefs about justice, compassion, and human responsibility.

This book opens your eyes into a world that we, as society, fear. It displays the darker side of humans, the side we like to pretend never happened and push aside. I read it for English 114 and instantly fell in love.

This is a book that will make you think, reflect and appreciate life and the world we live in. Simon Wiesenthal gives no excuses for his decisions, but opens up the idea to others and asks them to place themselves in his shoes, offering them a chance to decide what it is they would do. Great thinkers from around the world, and from various philosophical stances, attempt to answer the question that no one can ever truly understand unless they were there.
Take a chance and read it, and you can decide what it is you would do.

    An Okay Sunflower

It was an okay book, id highly recommend DIary of Anne Frank' instead, this book is filled with a descent story which i feel is more based on strong biases (anti-Polish, Pro-German approach) towards one side and i feel does not present explanations to the reasons behind the actions that took place. You should do more research into eastern european history to be able to identify the holes in this story.
i personally wouldn't recommend it but if you really really need something to read go and read another book
