Sunwing

by Kenneth Oppel

July 19, 2001 | Mass Market Paperbound

In this thrilling continuation of Shade?s saga, Kenneth Oppel recaptures the adventure and poignancy of Silverwing, which Smithsonian magazine called ?a tour-de-force fantasy,? and takes it to a new level of excitement. Swept up in a perilous journey that takes them to the far southern jungle into the homeland of Goth, Shade and Marina must use all their resource-fulness to rescue Shade?s father?and stop Goth from creating eternal night.

Already a bestseller in trade paperback?nearly 50,000 copies sold?Sunwing is the most anticipated mass market release this season.

?In Sunwing, Oppel admirably fulfills his promise of a sequel. The pace is hectic, the villains are dastardly, and the narrative style is that of a series of extremely visual scenes. By book?s end, in a tour-de-force of clever plotting, all is resolved. This book is a natural for the on-screen generation.??Sarah Ellis, Quill & Quire

?Oppel?s skill as a writer is such that, short of developing furry wings and bat sonar, the reader begins to see and experience the world as a bat would, and arrives at a point when she or he cares deeply whether Shade Silverwing and his cohorts live or die?a wonderful story.??Susan Perren, The Globe and Mail

?Sunwing will keep young readers glued to the page. Right and wrong, breathtaking struggles, good and bad, loveable little creatures and dastardly big bullies were all there. The prose and the multi-layered plot flow with natural ease. Oppel is master of his words. He writes nuanced, economic prose that is wholly effective. Oppel is a beautiful writer who carries us through his wide world with eclectic energy, wisdom and whimsy.??Elizabeth MacCallum, National Post

    Excellent read

My daughter had me buy it the day after it was released and with in the week she was finished it and reading it again. Unfortunately we were not aware of the first book SilverWing until a short time later but she read it to and more of Mr. Oppel's books since then. I can't believe I did two reviews today, I never do these things. I am so pleased that there are still good writers like Mr. Oppel and A. Dragonblood writing stories with out sex nonsense for younger readers.

The first book in this series, Silverwing, won 11 awards; this book won 8. It continues the saga of Shade a young silverwing bat. He has been in search of his father. He believes it is linked to the silver bands he has been tagged with and that his father was also tagged with. He discovers a mysterious forest inside a human building with plenty of bugs to eat, fresh water and thousands of bats. It is also a haven, free from the tyranny of birds, and especially owls. Yet his friends are not so sure it is the place to be.

He and his friends are soon swept up into a world they could never have imagined, transported to Latin America and the jungles. They soon become embroiled with the Vampyrum Spectrum bats and their king Goth. The little silverwing with heart, busts battle bats with 3 foot wing spans and other animals and creatures formerly unknown to him. Can Shade unite rats, small bats and even owl's in a battle against Goth who is trying to turn the world into eternal night? The story woven around mythology and legends and actual animal behaviour is wonderful to read - it is a page turner and you will not be able to put it down.

    Just as Good as Silverwing

Silverwing and other members of his tribe go on a journey and search for his father. Their final destination lands them deep in the South American jungle. What they had hoped to discover is far from what they actually find. I can't go into any more details of the plot as it would give away too much. The plot was based on an amazingly disturbing bit of US military history.

This is a dark story, one that is not expected. The evil creatures are very evil and there are scenes that make you squirm. The characters are compelling and life-like. A page-turner of a book that made me stay up late to finish. All the plot lines left open from the first book were resolved and the book has a complete ending giving no indication that there will be another book to follow. It will be interesting to see where the plot goes in the last book, Firewing.
