Swim The Fly

by Don Calame

Candlewick Press | April 14, 2009 | Hardcover

Three adolescent boys with a single goal: see a reallive naked girl. The result? Razor-sharp, rapid-fi re, and raunchy, of course. And beyond hilarious.

Fifteen-year-old Matt Gratton and his two best friends, Coop and Sean, always set themselves a summertime goal. This year''s? To see a real-live naked girl for the first time - quite a challenge, given that none of the guys has the nerve to even ask a girl out on a date. But catching a girl in the buff starts to look easy compared to Matt''s other summertime aspiration: to swim the 100-yard butterfly (the hardest stroke known to God or man) as a way to impress Kelly West, the sizzling new star of the swim team. In the spirit of Hollywood's blockbuster comedies, screenwriter-turned-YA-novelist Don Calame unleashes a true ode to the adolescent male: characters who are side-splittingly funny, sometimes crude, yet always full of heart.

Swim The Fly as excellent as it was, was a little too immature. But by no means do I think that it makes this novel any worse. It was enjoyable throughout and I can surely say that I would never want to "Swim the Fly"

    Surprisingly Good

I am not nor have I ever been a teenage boy and I have to say I was unsure if I would find anything of interest to me in this book. I am happy to say that I did.

While filled with the toilet humor, naked girl talk and drinking that we all seem to think are the only things boys think about it was also filled with teamwork, believing in yourself and friendship.
Matt, Coop and Sean have been bestfriends forever. Together they are on the swim team and together every year they set a goal for themselves. This years goal brings them together and tears them apart in unexpected ways.
On top of that Matt has agreed to swim the fly and has the added pressure of training for that on his mind.

Things to look for--The scene in Sean's sister's room. Girl's Just wanna Have Fun
    --The Girls Locker Room
    --The Party
    --Anything involving Grandpa

With lots of hilarity and humality this is one summer you'll remember for awhile. Good read for boys looking for something fun, light and easy.
