Unfortunately, compared to some of the great vampire, paranormal
books i've read as of late, this was utterly disappointing. Some
parts felt really really rushed. I mean, the ending in itself
disappointed me, and overall i just felt like this was the summary
of a great story and book.
This story consists of Quincie, a high school girl, committed to
continuing the family business once her parents pass away, and once
the chef (almost like a grandfather to her) is brutally murdered
few pages into the book. While trying to replace the chef alongside
her ridiculous uncle, she is coping with her feelings for her
werewolf best friend, who she loves and vice versa, but who refuses
to move beyond platonic in an attempt to not hurt her, or start
something when he inevitably has to leave to join a pack. The
sexual tension between those two is pretty lame, and even when they
finally share a moment and your heart skips a beat, the ending
brings you right back to disappointment. Smith, the author, tends
to dispose of characters awfully fast and not really expand in
terms of the story of their deaths. I guess if Smith wants a
character gone, she just has them killed off, end of story. And how
bout Mitch the homeless guy - kind of useless character, i'm sorry,
but Smith spent way to much time on him even as a minor character.
And finally Bradley, the new chef, and quite predictably the devil
behind angels eyes. His character was one of the better ones in the
book, but to bring him so far and then to just say tootles (read it
and you'll know what i mean), once again, LAME.
I cannot recommend this book. I have read so much better. It
definitely has good moments - Bradley is an entertaining character,
and i don't mind Quincie most of the time - but overall it is far
too rushed a story (it deserves far more pages than it has - proper
character and story development would have done wonders) to receive
even one thumbs up from me.
If you do decide to read it, i hope you enjoy it. but i guarantee
you will have read better!!!
