Tempest Rising

by Nicole Peeler

Orbit | November 1, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn''t quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie''s lamp.

If you love Sookie Stackhouse, then you''ll want to dive into Nicole Peeler''s enchanting debut novel.

Jane True has lived her whole life as an outsider. Jane's Mom swept into town one night and into her father's heart. One day Jane's mother left without a word. While dealing with her absence Jane turned to her best friend for comfort. When he dies and the town blames Jane for the accidental death, Jane falls into a whole of despair. Thank goodness that her nightly swims in the ocean save her from herself. But why does the ocean call to her?

Quickly Jane finds herself on a journey of discovery as she finds out that she is in fact only half human! Soon her little town is turned upside down as there are more non-mortals in her town that she realized. The "new" non-mortal community welcomes Jane with open arms. When one of them is murdered, Jane finds herself protecting her town, her new friends and herself.

This is the first book in Peeler's series. It is quite funny and I am really drawn to that type of writing. With all the things that Jane goes through in the first book you can't wait to see what will become of her as she emerges from her past and into a very bright future.

    Great debut novel!

This is a new author, a first book, it has a great cover and a fun story on the inside.
This is an urban fantasy novel that was refreshingly original. Sure it had a vampire romantic interest, BUT the focus on Ryu was NOT that he was a vampire but that he was an investigator. And not once ounce of emo, tortured vampire was squeezed out of this character, or any of the characters for that matter. This book has selkies, kelpies and nahauls (oh, my!). It has gnomes and naga and Alphars (elves, really, but don't call them that). There are no faerie courts or stand-offs between vamps and weres. There is no love triangle. There IS a lot of sex, but it's not graphically descriptive (thank the gods!) and although it was a little too in the forefront of the book, it was easy (for me) to skip over and get back to the mystery. Yes! There is mystery! Woohoo!

Twenty-six year old Jane True ends up in the middle of a murder mystery which somehow is connected to her and she discovers that she isn't just a normal human who likes to swim in the ice-cold ocean and who doesn't need a coat in the winter. She has a past that continuously haunts her in the small town she lives in in Maine. She finds out a lot about her present and past in this book that she never knew could even be possible. She grows as a person throughout the novel and regains confidence she had lost years ago.
I am terribly anxious for the next book which will be released in July 2010.

Tempest Rising is Nicole Peeler's debut novel and let me tell you, she does not disappoint. Many will pick up the book when they see the beautiful cover art, but the writing itself sucks you right in. You will be glad you picked it up.

Jane True has never fit it, her Mother came into small town Rockabill in the middle of the storm and left the same way six years later. Jane lost someone very close to her and blames herself for it, as do many in the town. Jane is an outcast, she always knew she was different, but not this different.
