Tempted

by P. C. Cast, Kristin Cast

St. Martin's Press | October 27, 2009 | Hardcover

So…you'd think after banishing an immortal being and a fallen High Priestess, saving Stark's life, biting Heath, getting a headache from Erik, and almost dying, Zoey Redbird would catch a break.  Sadly, a break is not in the House of Night school forecast for the High Priestess in training and her gang.  Juggling three guys is anything but a stress reliever, especially when one of them is a sexy Warrior who is so into protecting Zoey that he can sense her emotions.  Speaking of stress, the dark force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading, and Zoey is beginning to believe Stevie Rae could be responsible for a lot more than a group of misfit red fledglings.  Aphrodite's visions warn Zoey to stay away from Kalona and his dark allure, but they also show that it is Zoey who has the power to stop the evil immortal.  Soon it becomes obvious that Zoey has no choice: if she doesn't go to Kalona he will exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her.  Will Zoey have the courage to chance losing her life, her heart, and her soul?  Find out in the next spectacular installment in the House of Night Series, Tempted

    *** SPOILERS ALERT!! ***

I was very pleased with this book. In the past 4 books for the House of Night series, P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast spend a lot of time explaining everyone and everything. By the sixth book, we know where everyone goes to school, we know the characters, we know Kalona and what he's done, so there's no need to get into it again.

However, more than half of the book was spent with the House of Night kids plotting what to do with Kalona and then … nothing happened! I expected some kind of battle between Zoey and Kalona and Neferet, but instead, a character was killed off and the Casts left us hanging until the next book, Burning, comes out.

I was surprised to see what happened between Stevie Rae and Rephaim. I was torn between whether or not it was her humanity that wanted to save him, or whether or not there's still evil in her bones, which is why she didn't want to kill him. The imprint was unexpected, but I'm curious to see what will happen in the next book between the two.

One thing that is really getting to me is the word usage … we've heard "bullpoopie" enough and the phrase "ah, hell" was used more times than necessary. If there will be other swearing in the book, it seems childish to have words like "bullpoopie" seem to be taken seriously. Maybe it's just me.

In the end, we were left hanging with multiple story lines and nothing really happened in the book. It was a good, quick read, but it would have been nice to have at least one resolution.

Okay. I can't keep repeating myself because then I will be doing exactly what the books are doing. They should have killed Kalona a long time ago and made Neferet the new villain. I can't stand this anymore. Make a new villain! I don't care! Just anything besides the same. The ending of this book, though, was pretty darn good. Finally! Something good to work with! It happens in like the last 3 pages. Whatever. Let's find out what happens next....

So after I gave birth to my son, lazing around the house, cus "come on" my newborn slept around the clock. So I thought "heck I am gonna give this series a try". Well I am not going to front, I was in love with the first five books of this series, blame it on the hormones or trying to re-live some form of my youth, I was addicted and gobbled up all the books in less than a week.

The sixth book happened and I am now questioning my sanity, I will say this "WHAT THE HELL KIND OF BULLSH*T WAS THIS". I am all kinds of annoyed with this series, and I am weeping for the trees lost, and the ink that could have been used for something more productive. The House of Night series I feel has become a great disappointment, don't know what the HON series is, I don't have the time to explain.

This book picks up right after the showdown between Kelona and Zoey and her goons. I was expecting this book to be wrapped in action and have this storm a brewing. Wanna know what I got? Zoey and her boyfriend drama, some psychic visions, Zoey and her messed up feelings of being in love with the entire universe. Basically just a bunch of adolescents using swear words, and throwing in slang's because nothing says teenager like slang's.

Did anything eventful happen in this book, honestly I can't even say because I am trying to forget the time I wasted on this, the Cast's needs a serious reality check. I am not the type to spend time talking the politics of a book, buuttttt I realize this book is filled with stereotypes.

Heads up to the authors, not every black person speaks like they stepped out of a rap video, not every gay man tends to over exaggerate and go crazy for shoes, and I am a little sad that this was the best way they portrayed diversity. MOVING ON!!!

The use of language! This book is a blow to teenagers, I was one not toooo long ago and I don't remember speaking like an idiot. This book hit me with such deep words like……

" I heart me some brown pop" Are you thinking what I am thinking?

"I love Z, more than white bread" I don't even know what that means.

Not to mention the "sex thing" that pops up all around. Like sex is everything to these characters but lest we forget " Zoey ain't no HO" thing is she can't help how she feels cus all these guys r so hot. Of course puritan Zoey has sworn of sex since she slept with a teacher at the house of night, a person she knew all for a tremendous amount of time, of a month. Since Zoey ain't no Ho, she will not sleep with the guy she's pretty much known all her life, you tell me if Zoey ain't no HO!

Then to make matters worse they kill of my fave character. I am all kinds of pissed! Something I did like, well…… Stevie Rae and a Raven Mocker, I don't know but that is sounding all kinds of hot.

I just cannot believe a series with such promise turned out like this, I could go on about all the ways I dislike Zoey but quite frankly this review will never end. I will not continue, just ask around to see what's up. Jesu, I am in the mood for some Edward Cullen!

This book came out in November of '09 and I was extremely sceptical because I was extremely annoyed of Zoey and her constant drama with like, 3 guys. Totally frustrating. After about 3 months I finally picked up the book, and wow. I was blown away, it was SO much better than the first 5. Zoey is not the only narrator in this book, Stevie Rae and Aphrodite each tell different parts from their own point of view which I found was more interesting than Zoey's parts. After Banishing Kalona, Zoey goes off to find him and learns that he and Neferet are trying to gain control of the vampyre high council. While they are gone Stevie Rae saves a raven mocker and I'm not going to spoil it so I'm stopping. This book was extremely gripping and like, just amazing :) and the guy drama? It gets better. Must read!

I couldn't finish reading this book, because I can't help but feel like I've read it before. I don't get why Authors want to ruin a good book by drawing it out or repeating the same thing over and over again. Anyways I can't say i enjoyed reading this book nor will I read anymore editions in this series. Unless I get really bored and want to read about different guys falling in and out of love with some dumb girl who can't seem to make any smart choices in life.

Tempted by P.C. Cast is the sixth book in the House of Night series. It starts off slow and dull, but after about a hundred pages, the story becomes more interesting.

I think the most interesting character was Rephaim. The normal cast of characters: Zoey and Stevie Rae, both kept having repetitive thoughts about doing one thing but not wanting to do it at the same time, or explaining too much of what we already know. That is how much of the unnecessary parts passed.

I was not impressed that Erik was seen as the bad guy although it was Zoey who was hurting his feelings by dealing with so many guys at the same time she was going out with him. Zoey is seen as young, and even her grandma states that she has a lot of time to choose one guy, thus it is alright to have many guys on the side.

    CONTAINS SPOILERS:

Kalona is not dead. He still wants Zoey and he visits her in her dreams. Erik could tell by the way Kalona looked at Zoey before that he felt something for her. Erik is annoyed that she isn't giving him much attention even though they are dating. Zoey feels that Erik wants to control her because he doesn't want her being so close to other guys, so she breaks up with him.

Stark had sworn himself to Zoey to be her warrior, but she is only learning what it means to have a warrior. A warrior can feel what is going on in the mind of the person they are protecting, which is good and bad at the same time.

Stevie Rae and Erik and a few others go in groups to search the premises to see if all of the Raven Mockers are gone. Stevie Rae, who is searching a section on her own, finds a live one, who calls himself Rephaim. He wants her to kill him, but she takes pity on him, for a reason she cannot understand. It was when he laughed that Rephaim, seemed so human that she could not end his life. He is terribly hurt and thinks he will never be able to fly again.

Stevie Rae feels that Zoey knows that she is hiding something. After all, Aphrodite is imprinted with Stevie Rae. Thus, Stevie Rae decides to tell Zoey about the red fledglings that she has been hiding, who have not yet chosen good over evil.

However bad hiding the Raven Mocker might have seemed to her, she will not tell of his existence. She wants to help Rephaim, so she sends him down to the tunnels to where the evil red fledglings are now residing. The good red fledglings are residing with the nuns.

Kalona shows Zoey visions of his past. He used to be Nyx's warrior, but then he started to feel more for Nyx than he should have. That was when he was banished from that realm and became the type of person he used to detest. He suggests to Zoey that it might be possible for him to change if she was with him, just like how she changed Stark, making him good, because of the possibility that Nerferet is corrupting him.

Aphrodite sees a vision that has two end results. One in which Zoey is Kalona's lover, and everyone, human and vampire, is burning in a wheat field. The other one is of Zoey saying something to Kalona that destroys him. Zoey is confused and doesn't know if she should trust Kalona, but she knows that her body wants him, because her soul used to be A-ya, a maiden that was made to love Kalona. Zoey feels as though Nyx shouldn't have banished Kalona because he started to love her. Zoey imagined that Kalona felt an immense pain for having been banished and breaking the centuries old bond of no longer being Nyx's warrior.

Zoey thinks that she can locate Kalona by the places she is seeing in her dreams. While searching online, her friend, Jack, discovers people writing about Kalona on their blogs. This leads the group to Venice. Kalona is claiming to be Erebus, and Neferet is claiming to be Nyx Incarnate. Zoey wants to speak against them.

Stevie Rae refuses to go with Zoey because she claims that the red fledglings need her. She suggests that Aphrodite fill her place in the circle. Stevie Rae wants to convince the evil red fledglings, to come join her at the House of Night, where the rest of the red fledglings are residing.

The evil red fledglings detest Stevie Rae and want to kill her. They are looking forward to the return of Neferet. Just before the sun comes up, Stevie Rae comes to convince the evil ones, and they tell her that Rephaim is on top of a building and is hurt. The evil fledglings threatened him to go up there. She goes to save him, however, it's a trap and she's caged in. Rephaim attempts to save her from the sun.

Burned and damaged, the two make it into the ground. He offers her his blood, which smells odd, but she has no choice, otherwise she'll die. Her imprint is then broken with Aphrodite and a new unusual imprint is created with Rephaim.

Heath overhears Neferet and Kalona speaking privately, and is killed. This results in Zoey's soul shattering, leaving her body an empty shell. Will Zoey be able to stop the evil? Or will Aphrodite's vision become reality?

This is the first House of Night novel I didn't make an effort to read in one night. There were too many moments filled with characters whinging and not much else going on.

While "boy troubles" were present in the other novels, in seemed in this one to be the focus of everything. The idea that everyone this young 16 year old girl meets becomes attracted to her is ludicrous. And then we're all supposed to identify with her troubles juggling them all?! Not likely.

Mostly, I was dumbfounded over her different reactions to Stark and Erik, and how she deals with both of them. Stark, in her words, practically "rapes" a girl and she's totally okay with that because "he's good now." Meanwhile, Erik is far too possessive and controlling because he's calling her out on all the guys he has to share her with. She cheated on him but he's the one who's being ridiculous?! The beginning of the novel spends too much of it's time trying to convince us the Erik is now a jerk, when he was nothing but romantic and understanding in the beginning.

Later on, Zoey makes a discovery about why some of the kids are still on Neferet and Kalona's side. This is something that could have been integral and made for some substance in the plot. The climax is less the stunning... and instead the author's concentrate on Zoey belittling them, calling them crazy, and even having all out confrontations with name-calling. Where's the compassion a high priestess should show? Why is she not more concerned with figuring this out rather than dismissing them?

While this story is set in the aftermath of the huge ice storm that occurred in "Hunted," I'm left with a simple question: Where are the parents?! A fairly large natural phenomena has occurred where people could have been hurt, that is traumatizing and scary, and yet no one calls their parents and the adults don't storm the school wanting to know if everyone is okay. Ridiculous.

I just found all of this less than appetizing. I can't enjoy a novel I find myself scoffing at and truly, there was no plot. As the saying goes: all filler, no killer.

    Changed for the better

Tempted was by far the best book in the House of Nigh series. Not only did the writing style get changed up, but it was a lot less annoyingly repetitive.

We take off right where "Hunted" ended. The gang of fledglings, vampires, Zoey's grandmother and the nuns are all held up at the Benedictine Abbey after taking on the Fallen immortal, Kalona and Neferet. Zoey may have won the battle, but not the war. They only scared away the evil doers and made them flee for the time being.

With Neferet and Kalona out of the picture, momentarily, our group of misfits do a clean up sweep of anymore threats, plot their next steps, get some rest and deal with some boy drama. Of course, boy drama is always at the top of the list when your world is about to be taken back to barbarian times. Zoey grows a pair and dumps one of the boyfriends, but that still leaves two and whatever temptation she feels towards wanting to be lover of Kalona. But as High Priestess, we've learned, that she'll always have the need for multiple consorts in addition to her personal warrior, Stark. All the different needs that come with being a High priestess just indicates that there will be no lack of boy drama in the future. The more hot men, the better, right?

Not only do we get to read Zoey's view points of everything and everyone in the story, we finally get into the heads of the others who have some major changes ahead. Stevie Rae has adjusted to her new red vampness but she is still not being 100% honest with any of her friends. She has much to hide and her choices may seem illogical in the slightest, but maybe her heart and infinity of the earth will allow her to see things that the ordinary eye does not see. We also get some perspectives from Heath and a new addition. It gives much more depth to this series and gives us a break from all the worry and panic that goes around in Zoey's mind.

What will Neferet and Kalona get up to now that they've fled? The gang will find out through their very gifted members, Aphrodite and Kramisha. All they have to do is put the pieces together and they will be led right to the evil SOB's. As they plot out their plans to get to where Neferet and Kalona are, Zoey gets more and more confused about who Kalona really is and which side he is on. Will Zoey choose the right side? Will Stevie Rae?

The ending is pretty freakin good. Its deeply emotional for the characters. For once, I can't wait for the next House of night book. The changes in this book made this read open to all ages instead of what it was before. The Queen of mean, Aphrodite is still my favorite and would like to see some POV from her in the next installment. She's vicious in such an enjoyable way and has a bigger heart than what she shows to everyone else. But her fierce verbal skills keep me coming back for more. This one also felt a bit after school special at times.. consisisting of choosing good over evil and that you can improve your life at any point. Great read this time around. Who doesn't like a bit of cheeseyness in your reads?

Let's go already. Pick it up. There is no need to stretch out basic concepts for an entire book. In this installment, the books seems to set up the scene and concept for the NEXT book. Not a whole lot happened here. Let me summarize: Zoey (who has kick butt power) is torn and whiny about boys. Stevie Ray is secretive and insecure. The bad guys are the same. Mix in some small dramas and a cliff hanger. The end. Could have been half the novel.

    An Improvement

    Heather Benson

It feels good, but she knows it's not over yet, not even close. She has banished Kalona and Neferet and his nasty children, the Raven mockers, saved her best friend, Stevie Rae and her new warrior, Stark. But her problems are far from over; they're only just beginning, and about to get worse.
The biggest and most threatening problem is that she knows that she has not destroyed Kalona, and has no idea where he is now or what him and Neferet have planed. Not to mention that she has recently discovered that she is the reincarnation of Kalona's soul mate and lover, A-ya, and that he continues to visit her in her dreams. To add to this she can sense that there is something off with Stevie Rae and is sure that there is something that she is hiding from her, but she has no idea what or how dangerous it could be. But Stevie Rae is not the only one keeping things to herself, Zoey is too. So how is it fair for her to expect her friends to tell her every thing when she won't for the same, but shouldn't she be able to tell Stevie Rae, her best friend?
All Zoey can think about is how easy it used to be, before she turned into a vampire fledgling and started at the House of Night. Back when her biggest worries were about her next big math test and the latest fight that she and Heath had gotten in to. Sometimes she wishes that she could just go back, back to before her life was turned upside down. But she can't and has to accept that and work on figuring out what has to be done next.
So what is next for Zoey and her gang? Can she fix things up between her and Stevie Rae, will they ever be able to share all their secrets again, and help each other solve theirs problems? And what is she planning to do about Kalona? In the end will she be able to destroy him or is their soul deep connection to much to fight, can she resist his seductive powers or will A-ya over power her will?

I the latest book of the House of Night series, you will discover the answers to some of these questions and more. I found that this book was an improvement from the last, but definitely not my favourite so far. It starts slow and I find that there is a bit too much detail in the beginning, which takes up a lot of the book and causes that ending to feel a bit rushed. However the ending in this latest book leaves you will many questions and really wanting to know what will happen next. It also really sets up a good base for the next book. I think that if done right the next book could be the best one yet.

Hmmm ... how to describe this book i'm still confused i think i loved it but i still dunno i think its the ending caught me off guard! The story was great the way the characters grew from marked to tempted it was fabulous. This book had good parts to it there were some moments where i wish i could fast forward to the next action. Also I really like the different characters perspective (kind of like the blue blood series and breaking dawn novel.) SPOILER................................................................................................................... SPOILER!!! DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!!! LAST TIME!!!
i dislike the way how zoey gets rid of one of her guys and the reason kills me!! it make no sense how he went from fabulous to THAT!!! IF YOU READ THE BOOK YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN! The next spoiler is that one of the important people gets killed off!!! yeah i know!!! so left field!! Also i can't wait for burned when is it coming out again!! i hope its not September of next year!!

Good review. I think it's so weird how Erik go from fabulous guy to horrible possesive boyfriend, and anyways souldn't it be normal that he is jealous want he see his girlfriend with others boys. As for Heath i'm sure we will still see him in the next book, maybe he will be resurected, I don't know. Burned is suposed to come out in may or april, I can't wait!!

    Kelly Peres

Thanks! I know one minute Eriks the most understanding BF and then he goes into possessive, and jealous mode. I believe he has all the right to be possessive, she does have 3 guys including him fight for her. How do you feel about Stark? I dunno... Lol that would be weird if they do ressurect him, but it also can be some kind of twist if he has something like either Stevie Rae or maybe Aphrodite. Anyway we will have to wait and see. But did you hear P.C. Cast has released a description and the book cover for Burned. Here check it out: http://midnightglance.blogspot.com/

    Anne-Marie

Well now that Eric and Heath are out of the way I guess Zoey will have a serious romance with Stark, anyways I just hope that she stop changing boyfriend each fives minutes. And yes, I read description, looks good and the cover is gorgeous!

So, Zoey is back with all her friends and her boyfriend(s) in the 6th book for the HON series Tempted. I didn't like Hunted much so I thought this would be better. Apparently it wasn't, the ending was a cliff hanger as usual, the writing style wrecks it, and I thought it could've been better, way better. Alot of things have been going on with Zoey such as, drama, saving the vampire world etc. But I really don't care if her life is miserable because I find she is a wh*re, a cheater, and very annoying. The romance in this book is not the romance that makes you say "Aww that is so cute!" It's more of the romance that is icky, and immature. The vampires are always Happy-go-lucky in this book and not dark and mysterious, which is the way vampires are supposed to be. Not very excited for Burned.

This next segment of Zoey and the House of Night is fantastic. I love how they continue on in the story with no gaps. Also, this book doesn't spend a lot of time on the back story, the writers are assuming that by this point we have read all of the books in the series. It is very very sad but what a cliffhanger!!

I love the vampire genre (anyone who knows me will confirm this... LOL). This is a very light series, uncomplicated but interesting story. It's presented from the point of view of a teenager, and as the story progresses, the only thing I find myself thinking is... when is the next book coming out? The answer is... NOT SOON ENOUGH.
