Terrier: The Legend Of Beka Cooper #1

by Tamora Pierce

October 24, 2006 | Hardcover

Tamora Pierce begins a new Tortall trilogy introducing Beka Cooper, an amazing young woman who lived 200 years before Pierce''s popular Alanna character. For the first time, Pierce employs first-person narration in a novel, bringing readers even closer to a character that they will love for her unusual talents and tough personality.

Beka Cooper is a rookie with the law-enforcing Provost''s Guard, and she''s been assigned to the Lower City. It''s a tough beat that''s about to get tougher, as Beka''s limited ability to communicate with the dead clues her in to an underworld conspiracy. Someone close to Beka is using dark magic to profit from the Lower City''s criminal enterprises--and the result is a crime wave the likes of which the Provost''s Guard has never seen before.

Pierce has done it again, I have been drawn into every story that she has written. Her words weave a spell around you that you just don't want to pull yourself away from. Her charactors are strong willed and give an excellent example to any who read them to keep strong and true to yourself. As with her previous books this one is not lacking in adventure and mystery. Now the only problem is waiting for the rest of the trilogy to be published. Try it on for size, you wont be disappointed.

Pierce's latest book has Beka Cooper as her trademark heroine. Beka has led a a sorrowful childhood brought on by death on poverty. She is taken in by a noble family, but the moment that she received the opportunity, she set out to learn how to protect people that live the life that she lived before her lucky break.

Along the way she encounters much that is new to her: new friends, new places, and a new sense of danger. There is a child murderer on the loose and this time it has struck to close to home. Beka Cooper will not rest until the criminal meets justice.

Although it is a new type writting of style for Peirce, it hasn't cramped her style. This journal of a young woman has a simple, yet tangled plot that is told in a compelling fashion. It sucks you into the city of Corus in the land of Tortall. You get to know the characters as if you have known them your entire life. Filled with personality and magic, it is a must read for any one who has read any of the books set in the realm of Tortall.

    Another Tamora Hit

As a longtime fan of Tamora Pierce, I was far from dissatisfied with her latest work, Terrier. I was somewhat doubtful of her going into first-person, but I soon found I had nothing to worry about. Though I think this work is a bit more mature for ten year olds, 12-year-olds and up will be fine. The main character, Beka Cooper, is strong, silent, and refreshing. She struggles to make her mark in her new job as a Provosts' Dog, and faces all sorts of hurdles from being publicly embarassed, having her best friend -- the wife of a notorious mob-like leader -- lose her son, to having her family be embarassed by her profession to simple things like having feelings for the wrong type of guy.

All in all, a fantastic read, though don't be scared off by the size of the book! Definitely loved it, and DEFINITELY reccommend it to others. A great read for girls of all ages.
