Terror Threat: International And Homegrown Terrorists And Their Threat To Canada

by Dwight Hamilton, Kostas Rimsa

Dundurn | November 19, 2007 | Hardcover

The discovery of a suspected homegrown Islamic terrorist cell in our own backyard last year shocked most Canadians. The question arose: Is this country next on Al Qaeda''s hit list? But although terrorism in Canada did not begin with Al Qaeda, its fundamental dynamics are as unfamiliar to most of the public as the minutiae of quantum physics.

How could such shocking developments happen in a nation of "peacekeepers" that opposed the American intervention in Iraq? The majority of Canadians have no idea why soldiers are presently sacrificing their lives in Afghanistan. Terror Threat provides an examination of every key facet of current terrorist operations affecting this country -- and it does so in a way that shows how serious the dadnger really is. Who are these people? How do they operate? And why in the world are they trying to kill us?

    Terror Threat
I am a former RCMP undercover with experience in covert operations and took Kostas Rimsa's courses at Humber back in the 80's.
Points I like about the book:
Written by former members of military intelligence, (Dwight Hamilton and Kosta Rimsa) who both perspectives, an officer and an NCO, not "bedroom slipper" journalists that have no experience in the subject area which they write about. These guys are real, even the CIA says they must be experienced, according to the back cover.
Puts today's Al Qaeda headlines into perspective by integrating Islamic terrorism into a framework that mentions lots of terrorist groups of different beliefs.
Author's attention to detail in tactical matters such as terrorist recruitment, training and organization. There is five or six generations of terrorist groups history, ideology and tactics.
Hardbound book published by a mainstream publishing house, not a small self-publishing company spewing out low-quality paperbacks …therefore more trustworthy and worth the money
Pictures of FLQ telephone # notebook, where did they get their hands on that? And I like the fact that they aren't muckraking journalists out looking for an award by impressing their left-wing peers, or disgruntled former men of uniform that have nothing positive to say about our security services, in these respects, the book is unique. A Canadian first! Invaluable companion volume to their fist book (Inside Canadian Intelligence). I should know, as would anyone with extensive experience in the area.

Excellent research. A Readers Digest into what terrorism is all about.

It's about time Hamilton and Rimsa came out with their sequel to their first book, Inside Canadian Intelligence.
After reading so many American-centric books on the terror threat, finally I have one that means something to me, a Canadian. Not only is Terror Threat a great read, it also took me on a journey of our country's history with terrorism and explained why events unfolded and the impact they have on this country to this day. I clearly remember being in Quebec and living at St Hubert army base during the FLQ crisis and the authors were dead on with their analysis.
Well-written and thought-provoking. The only down side is i wish there were more photos to illustrate the various chapters.
Otherwise, it was an insightful attempt to show us we are not alone.
When's the third book in the trilogy coming out!

    Canadian terrorists?

I feel like a spy. Somebody from the publishing house slipped me a copy of Terror Threat before it was officially available.
Terror Threat is the second book by Dwight Hamilton with co-author Kostas Rimsa (published by Dundurn publishing; $35; 246 pages) that addresses something that sounds sort of un-Canadian-our national security. The first book Hamilton published was Inside Canadian Intelligence. It sold pretty well and was sort of prescient. As the Toronto Sun reviewer mentioned, "one day after Dwight Hamilton released his book Torontonians found out there may have been a homegrown terror ring in their midst." My cottage is just down the road from where those alleged terrorists were training. That made us cottagers all feel just grand, I'll tell you.
And then along comes Terror Threat, another little gem that makes that thorn in the side our Canadian complacency even pricklier. It's another very accessible and dare I say fun read, but it's pretty unsettling. Educational too. Like every other kid growing up in the '60s, when I first heard about guerilla warfare, the image that sprang to mind was apes in the streets. In addition to shining a light on the little corners of terrorist activity that dot our country, he provides a illuminating history lesson about terrorists' pasts. (you'll have to read it for yourself to find out where guerillas come from.) You'll also be amazed by his litany of the numbers of innocent Canadians who's perished or disappeared at the hands of terrorists. I'm no international conflict expert, but it seems to me that unless a lot of people read this book and take action based upon that reading, we might be in for a lot more disappearances. And yeah, it's scary.
