Terry Fox: His Story (revised)

by Leslie Scrivener

McClelland & Stewart | September 1, 2000 | Trade Paperback

Terry Fox, the one-legged runner from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, made an indelible impression upon people across Canada and around the world. An outstanding athlete with a stubborn and competitive spirit, he lost his leg to cancer at 19, but said "nobody is ever going to call me a quitter."

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox set out from St. John's, Newfoundland to begin the run across Canada that he named the Marathon of Hope. His ambition was to raise a million dollars for cancer research. It wasn't easy. Initial support from communities varied from terrific to nothing at all. His prosthetic leg was painful to run on, and there were always traffic and extreme weather conditions to deal with. But, by the time he reached Ontario - a journey of more than 3,000 kilometres - word of his achievement had spread, and thousands cheered him and followed his progress. Terry's spirits soared, and now he hoped to raise $22 million dollars - one dollar for every Canadian. He succeeded in this ambition, but the Marathon of Hope ended near Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. The cancer had spread to his lungs, and, after running 24 miles in one day, on the next he could run no further.

When cancer finally claimed his life in 1981, Canada mourned the loss of a hero, but the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope lives on. The Terry Fox Foundation raised more than $17 million in 1999, and support for the event nationally and around the world is growing.

Terry Fox: His Story, is an amazing book. It is amazing in so many ways, the book gives you the impression that although Terry Fox only had one good leg, he wasn't going to let it spoil the life that he wanted to live. As he was lying in the hospital waiting for surgery Terry was reading a book, and this is where he got the idea to run across Canada. This book also gave us a view of how people seen Terry, and most of the people seen him as a child's role model. He is also a role model for many adults too. Also the book tells us just how much Terry trained and thet he ran in any weather, whether it was rain, snow, 50km/h winds or anything, he was determined. Although Terry Fox did die of Cancer, in his recognition every year, there is a Terry Fox run and the money raised goes directly to Cancer Research. When Terry was on his run across Canada, people all over were giving him money and he never kept it for himself, it always went to the Cancer Research. This book is a must read because it tells you just how much courage one person had, even if he only had one good leg and an artificial leg.

    Courageous Young Canadian

"Terry Fox: His Story" is a moving narrative of Terry's Marathon of Hope across Canada during the summer of 1980. Describing in just over 200 pages how Terry triumphed over adversity, the reader becomes cognizant of the frustrations that existed in the early stages of this historic journey to raise funds for cancer research. This reviewer has concluded that the name "Terry Fox" is synonymous with "courage."

After running through eastern Canada, it is Ontario where there is a major breakthrough and the momentum starts to build whereby people begin to understand that Terry is not running for himself but for all people who have cancer.

The ever humble Terry describes that he is not a hero and those accompanying him on the Marathon are just as vital to its success. Realizing that there was every possibility that his cancer might recur and that he might not be able to complete his run Terry, in a premonitory statement, indicates that the cause must never die and the fight to find a cure for cancer must continue after him.

A must read for all those who require inspiration in life.

From Our Editors

One of the most inspiring stories of hope and courage in Canadian history, Terry Fox: His Story is presented in this revised edition. In 1980, the 19-year-old cancer victim attempted to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Fox made it all the way from Newfoundland to Ontario before the spread of cancer halted his mission, but the dream he held continues to touch Canadians today. Leslie Scrivener covered Fox's original Marathon of Hope, and based her book on interviews with the people closest to him, and even Fox's own diary. The book has been fully revised from the original 1981 edition, and promises to keep the inspiration of Fox's run alive.
