Thank You For Smoking: A Novel

by Christopher Buckley

Random House Publishing Group | February 14, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Nobody blows smoke like Nick Naylor. He's a spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies-in other words, a flack for cigarette companies, paid to promote their product on talk and news shows. The problem? He's so good at his job, so effortlessly unethical, that he's become a target for both anti-tobacco terrorists and for the FBI. In a country where half the people want to outlaw pleasure and the other want to sell you a disease, what will become of the original Puff Daddy?

Satire at its best.

You ever feel sympathy for an immoral character? No? Read this book - Nick Naylor - spokesman for the Tobbacco Industry is an morally bankrupt and a throughly unlikeable person, but he's the best at what he does. What he does is promote people's right to smoke, even if it kills them.

Nick is a caricature of the smiling face on T.V. that tells us that there is no definitive proof that smoking causes cancer or is unhealthy. A really dispicable guy. But Buckley somehow makes him into a sympathetic and tragic character deserving of our support and sympathy. He does this by introducing characters that are even worse than Nick and what they put him through.

A thorougly enjoyable read. I will be watching the movie this weekend.
