That Perfect Someone

by Johanna Lindsey

Gallery Books | June 15, 2010 | Trade Paperback

Returning to the "wickedly witty, lusciously sensual" (Booklist) world of her beloved Malory family, #1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey sweeps readers away on a seductive adventure in which a detested marriage contract turns childhood enemies into passionate lovers.

Nine years ago, Richard Allen fled England and his controlling father. Determined to live his own life, he took to the sea and settled in the Caribbean, joining a band of treasure-hunting pirates and adopting the persona of a carefree, seductive Frenchman named Jean Paul to guard the secrets of his past. When he slips back into England to carry out an urgent task, Richard becomes infatuated with a married woman, Georgina Malory. But his reckless attempt to woo Georgina at a masked ball turns out to be the worst mistake of his life because it brings him face to face with another beautiful woman.

Thrilled that her solicitors have finally come up with a way to free her from her betrothal contract to the Earl of Manford's son who abandoned her years ago, heiress Julia Miller is ready for the marriage mart and hopes to find that perfect someone at her friend Georgina's ball. Charmed by a masked Frenchman who gives her her first kiss, she can't help but pursue this mysterious man-until she makes a shocking discovery. Now, to avoid falling into a ruthless nobleman's trap, Julia must enter a risky, intimate charade with a man she never believed she could love.

"There's no better way to spend your time than with the Malorys-it's like sailing off to heaven," raves Romantic Times. With a little help from the lucky-in-love Malory family, will Richard and Julia discover in each other that perfect someone?

    Not bad but not great!

Liked again the way Johanna Lindsey writes in characters from previous Malory novels, which made this book more enjoyable to read. Plot twist at the end was good, but overall I felt this book fell a bit flat.

Richard and Julia were betrothed since they were youngsters and have disliked each other since their first encounter. Julia was five and Richard was a few years older. Richard and his brother are raised by a tyrant of a father and to get out of the marriage contract Richard flees the country thinking never to return. He does years later with Drew and Gabrielle who have come back to London to visit and he encounters Julia all grown up. Once they realize who each other is, they try to get the marriage contract from Richard's father to absolve the betrothal which would leave then free and clear to pursue their own endeavors. However, during this course of action, they fall in love. What I had a problem with (maybe just me) but who remembers things vividly from when you were five or a bit older? Julia and Richard had their moments but they just didn't connect for me. The story bits of James, Drew, Georgina and Gabrielle are great especially James.

About the Author

Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most successful romance authors. She has written over 30 books, of which 54 million copies are in print and have been translated into 12 languages. As a young wife and mother, Lindsey became a great fan of romance novels and wrote her first book on a whim. "I started writing as a hobby. I never thought of being a writer when I was young. Now I wouldn't want to do anything else." The first book, "Captive Bride" (1977) was written when she was 25. To the young author's great surprise, it made The New York Times Bestsellers list. Lindsey had found a romance formula that worked. Take any setting past or present, introduce a rascally-rakish male and a romantic heroine, let their hearts ignite with passion, lust, and love. Lindsey has something of a cult following, following such titles as "Heart of Thunder", "Hearts Aflame", "A Heart So Wild", and ''Keeper of the Heart". She has loyal fans reading "Glorious Angel" and "Gentle Rogue" and legions of devotees buying her Malory family series. Because her father was in the U.S. Army, Lindsey traveled widely as a child. She was born in Germany and grew up in Fort Knox, Kentucky. The family settled in Hawaii and Lindsey was married right after high school to her husband Ralph, who has since passed away. She has three sons and is a grandmother.
