About the Author

Shelby Foote, 1916 - Born on November 17, 1916, in Greenville, Miss., Shelby Foote is best known for his three-volume narrative history of the Civil War. He was educated at the University of North Carolina and served with the U.S. Army artillery during World War II. Foote has written short stories: Chickamunga, and Other Civil War Stories (1993); plays: Jordan County: A Landscape in the Round, produced in 1964; history: Stars in Their Courses: The Gettysburg Campaign (1994); and long fiction: Follow Me Down, Love in a Dry Season, and Jordan County: A Landscape in Narrative. He was awarded Guggenheim fellowships in 1958, 1959, and 1960, a Ford Foundation grant in 1963, the Dos Passos Prize for Literature in 1988, and has received honorary DLitt degrees from University of the South, Southwestern University, University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina, Millsaps University, and the University of Notre Dame.
