The Accidental Bride

by Denise Hunter

Thomas Nelson | January 3, 2012 | Trade Paperback

When a wedding reenactment turns real, Shay finds shes an accidental bride.

Shay Brandenberger is raising her daughter in Moose Creek, Montana, on her childhood ranch, nestled against the Yellowstone River. Despite the hard work, she cant seem to keep her head above water-and now the bank is threatening to foreclose. She prays for a miracle, but the answer she receives is anything but expected.

Having agreed to play the bride in the Founders Day wedding reenactment, Shay is mortified to be greeted at the end of the aisle by none other than Travis McCoy, her high-school sweetheart-the man who left her high and dry for fame and fortune on the Texas rodeo circuit.

Then the unthinkable happens. Thanks to a well-meaning busybody and an absentminded preacher, the make-believe vows result in a legal marriage. But before Shay can say annulment, Travis comes up with a crazy proposal. If she refuses his offer, she may lose her home. If she accepts, she may lose her heart.

Shay isnt sure if the recent events are Gods will or just a preachers blunder. Will trusting her heart to the man who once shattered it be the worst mistake of her life? Or could their marriage be the best accident that ever happened?

    A Cute Country Romance

This book is a love story involving high school sweethearts, an accidental wedding, and a whole lotta other country cuteness. It all begins when Travis McCoy, a rodeo cowboy, reenacts a wedding with Shay Brandenberger, a single Mom trying to get by on her ranch.

Since this book is romance fiction, it's obviously pretty predictable. But Denise Hunter does add in a great deal of drama and unexpected twists in the plotline. I couldn't stop reading because I just wanted the main characters to reunite! I really did fall in love with the characters, and (obviously) I quite enjoyed the cowboy/cowgirl element. I also liked the Christian element--it was not overbearing but gave the book a good standpoint.

If you're into romance novels and the country way of life, this is a book for you. I really enjoyed it and I can hardly wait to read it again.

    A wonderful read

Shay Brandenberger is living in Moose Creek, Montana trying to raise her daughter and keep her childhood ranch afloat. She begrudgingly agrees to play the part of the bride in the Founder's Day wedding reenactment and is mortified to see that the groom across from her is her high school sweetheart Travis McCoy, who left her high and dry on the steps of the courthouse 14 years earlier. Suddenly the reenactment ends up becoming a legal marriage when a mistake with a marriage license occurs. Travis comes up with a proposal that will save her ranch but may cost Shay her heart. Can she learn to trust a man who once betrayed her?

Shay struggles with trusting Travis with her heart after he abandoned her 14 years prior. She also carries burdens from her childhood that she is inadvertently passing on to her daughter. Travis struggles with trying to prove to Shay that he truly loves her and will not abandon her. One of the main themes through the book is the question of whether you are trying to please God or please man and the effects that that answer has on your life and the lives of those surrounding you. Denise Hunter weaves these elements seamlessly throughout the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely read more of her Big Sky Romances.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson via the B&B Media Group in exchange for my fair and honest review.

    Contemporary Cowboy Romance

After being persuaded to be the bride at her town's Founder's Day celebrations, Shay is shocked to see that the "groom" waiting at the top of the aisle is non other than Travis, her first love, and the man that left her on the courthouse steps 14 years earlier to pursue his rodeo dreams. Using the premise of a couple becoming accidentally married in reality when all they were doing was a reenactment of a historical event, the author explores topics such as forgiveness, trust and worrying about what others think. It is a romance story so there is a very strong romantic element. I enjoyed the storyline of Travis trying win back Shay's heart. In turn, I thought the story of Shay's feelings and struggle in believing and trusting Travis, even with his most honorable intentions, after being abandoned both by him and her husband in her past was believable and well written. Throw in her childhood poverty, her desperation at losing her ranch and her desire to do the best by her young daughter and I could certainly see where she was coming from. Because it is a romance novel, there are parts where the two run into situations where they're attraction to each other takes over. While the feelings are described, a few of which, while not crossing my personal lines, did make me consider whether I would want my teenager to read. And because I am reviewing with my personal Christian convictions, there is an element regarding that within the story that made me a bit uncomfortable. ( I don't know how else to say it without telling a part of the story). All in all, it was a good weekend read for those who enjoy a romance novel that has some exploration of issues we all go through thrown in.
