The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz

by Mordecai Richler
Afterword by: David Carpenter

McClelland & Stewart | November 1, 1989 | Mass Market Paperbound

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz is the novel that established Mordecai Richler as one of the world's best comic writers. Growing up in the heart of Montreal's Jewish ghetto, Duddy Kravitz is obsessed with his grandfather's saying, "A man without land is nothing." In his relentless pursuit of property and his drive to become a somebody, he will wheel and deal, he will swindle and forge, he will even try making movies. And in spite of the setbacks he suffers, the sacrifices he must make along the way, Duddy never loses faith that his dream is worth the price he must pay. This blistering satire traces the eventful coming-of-age of a cynical dreamer. Amoral, inventive, ruthless, and scheming, Duddy Kravitz is one of the most magnetic anti-heroes in literature, a man who learns the hard way that dreams are never exactly what they seem, even when they do come true.

I don't know why I waited so long to read Mordecai Richler's The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. This is a work of genius.

From a literary perspective, Richler's style is relentless, employing very little environmental description, choosing instead dialogue that scintillates. He cements plot with sharp, keen characters, an elegantly simplistic language. There isn't a scene, a phrase, a word out of place here.

From an entertainment perspective this a rocketing good read, with a beginning that seems slow to start and then suddenly launches off into the nervous, fidgeting, finagling world of huckster-Duddy. You detest his crass and insouciant behaviour. You weep for him when his tender underbelly is revealed. You are right there in the seedy world of 1950s Montreal.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz will now have a place in our permanent library here at The Old Stone House.

I enjoyed this read. It is a good mix of moral issues. It does contain a it's fair share of graphic language though.

This is a really good novel that I enjoyed. Richler is really descriptive. Read it if you like slow books cuz it's not quite action packed... interesting.

I dislike this book immensly. I do not know why high school kids are forced to read the worst books that were ever written in the history of mankind. Mein Kempf was probably better than this!

    Somewhat Boring

This book was excellent showing Duddy's absolute desire for land through cheating and manipulation. Although this book was good, there were many boring scenes that made this book deserve a rating of 4.
