The Art Thief: A Novel

by NOAH CHARNEY

Simon & Schuster | May 7, 2009 | Hardcover

Rome: In the small Baroque church of Santa Giuliana, a magnificent Caravaggio altarpiece disappears without a trace in the middle of the night.

Paris: In the basement vault of the Malevich Society, curator Genevi - ve Delacloche is shocked to discover the disappearance of the Society''s greatest treasure, White-on-White by Suprematist painter Kasimir Malevich.

London: At the National Gallery of Modern Art, the museum''s latest acquisition is stolen just hours after it was purchased for more than six million pounds.

In The Art Thief, three thefts are simultaneously investigated in three cities, but these apparently isolated crimes have much more in common than anyone imagines. In Rome, the police enlist the help of renowned art investigator Gabriel Coffin when tracking down the stolen masterpiece. In Paris, Genevi - ve Delacloche is aided by Police Inspector Jean-Jacques Bizot, who finds a trail of bizarre clues and puzzles that leads him ever deeper into a baffling conspiracy. In London, Inspector Harry Wickenden of Scotland Yard oversees the museum''s attempts to ransom back its stolen painting, only to have the masterpiece''s recovery deepen the mystery even further.

A dizzying array of forgeries, overpaintings, and double-crosses unfolds as the story races through auction houses, museums, and private galleries -- and the secret places where priceless works of art are made available to collectors who will stop at nothing to satisfy their hearts'' desires.

Full of fascinating art-historical detail, crackling dialogue, and a brain-teasing plot, Noah Charney''s debut novel is a sophisticated, stylish thriller, as irresistible and multifaceted as a great work of art.

    Confusing

It was pretty confusing. The plot was so twisted that by the end I barely knew what had happened. I found myself going back several times to figure out who the characters were, and when the surprise ending came about, I completely missed it. This book was too all over the place.

Yikes. It's very rare I'll NOT read a book I've started, no matter how bad. This one, I put down and away after a few chapters. Horrendous writing, characters that are caricatures, descriptions of artwork that when looked up online, do not resemble the real item in the least. And the author is an "expert" on art history and art-related crimes? I'm sure in his self-professed manner, he is.
Stay away from this one and anything subsequent the author may put out in the future.

The Art Thief starts out very well with the thefts set up nicely, unfortunately things only go rapidly down hill from there.

None of the characters are properly developed, although neither are any of the plots. Charney spends more time describing the girth of the French detective and what he eats than he does the plot lines. I couldn't help but think my copy was missing half the story. It feels like he knew how he wanted to begin and end the story, but couldn't quite figure out how to bring the two together and just hoped the reader wouldn't notice the plot holes, insensibilities and repetitiveness of the outcome.

In a book that is suppose to be about daring art thefts and the tracking of the thieves, this book failed to raise my heart rate even once and put me to sleep more often than not.

You know that guy in you Art History class that does not stop talking but never says anything? That is this book! The entire book is Art History 101 regurgitated in a way that insults the reader's intelligence.. It is a pretentious book that lacks originality.

I was really looking forward to this book and love the subject but there were too many characters, and they weren't developed well enough to make sense. I have never before gotten to the end of a book and wondered if I had missed entire chapters. I finished the book and had to re-read entire sections to find out about 3 or 4 major things (don't want to spoil anything by being specific). Maybe others won't have the same trouble but I did, and I'm a pretty intelligent reader. If you read this book, be sure to pay unusually close attention.
Due to the number of characters, this might make a better movie than a book - it's easier to keep track of multiple characters visually.

    A Great Art Thievery Book!

The Art Thief is a great book! The story revolves around three separate thefts of valuable art and, as each story unfolds, they begin to merge into one larger theft. The knowledge of the author about the art world makes this story completely believable while also educating the reader about the world of art acquisition and theft. The main characters are believable and complex and intertwined in ways that are surprising to the reader. I enjoyed the flow of this book with the movement among the three stories. Each story was so interesting in its own right that I found it difficult to find a place where I was willing to put down the book! I have added this author, Noah Charney, to my list of writers whose future work I will ensure to read!
