The Art of War

Editor: Sun Tzu
Foreword by: B. H. Liddell Hart
Translated by: Samuel B. Griffith

Oxford University Press | September 1, 1971 | Trade Paperback

Like Machiavelli''s The Prince and the Japanese Book of Five Rings, Sun Tzu''s The Art of War is as timely for business people today as it was for military strategists in ancient China. Written in China more than 2,000 years ago, Sun Tzu''s classic The Art of War is the first known study of the planning and conduct of military operations. These terse, aphoristic essays are unsurpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding, examining not only battlefield maneuvers, but also relevant economic, political, and psychological factors. Indeed, the precepts outlined by Sun Tzu regularly applied outside the realm of military theory. It is read avidly by Japanese businessmen and was touted in the movie Wall Street as the corporate raider''s bible. Providing a much-needed translation of this classic, Samuel Griffith has made this powerful and unique work even more relevant to the modern world. Including an explanatory introduction and selected commentaries on the work, this edition makes Sun Tzu''s timeless classic perfectly accessible to modern readers.

I received this book as a Christmas present with the words "This book changed my life." Not knowing quite what to make of this, I was interested in seeing exactly what was so "life changing". I would soon learn, through the words of Master Sun and many of the great ancient Chinese philosophers the way of combat. Not just in the physical sense but in an overwhelming worldliness. Thomas Cleary breaks down of each philosophers thoughts and interpretations of Sun Tzu's teachings, into a concise and easy to read and manner. It is quite possible and satisfactory for a reader to just accept this as a combat manual and nothing more, but for the deeper thinker, the words of Master Sun and his followers can be a fundamental grounding for the challenges and conflicts we face in our everyday lives. Thanks J.

    The Art of War

Astounding in simplicity, The Art of War applies as much to today's business world as it does to the warfare tactics of ancient China. Hailed as today's "corporate raider's bible", Sun Tzu's essay is just as applicable today as it was centuries ago. Although relating largely to traditional warfare techniques and politics, the study retains its relevance into the 21st Century. This essay explains concepts that readers can easily understand and apply whether in the world of buisness, or the world of game. Those seeking insight into strategic thought are strongly advised to read this book. Those who found this study to be anything but informative are encouraged to rebut

From the Critics

"I find this book to be an excellent complement to a traditional text. It illustrates key strategic concepts from an alternative perspective. Specifically, it effectively addresses: planning in a dynamic environment, importance of leadership and harmonious relations with subordinates, efficient use of resources, importance of internal and external assessments and decision making - ethics, reception, timliness, decision quality, etc."--Jeff Trailer, University of Houston
