The Awakening

by Kelley Armstrong

Doubleday Canada | April 28, 2009 | Trade Paperback

Book II in the Darkest Powers trilogy takes us deeper into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the everyday with riveting effect.

If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl - someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment - not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a group of people who call themselves The Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

I'm running for my life with three of my supernatural friends - a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch - and we have to find someone who can help us gain our freedom back before The Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

    *** SPOILERS ALERT!!! ***

I really, really liked this book. The Awakening, the 2nd book in the Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong, continues where it left off in the first book, The Summoning.

The Awakening opens up at the institute Chloe, Victoria, and Rachelle were taken to after they tried to escape Lyle House, having been tricked by Chloe's Aunt Lauren. Immediately, Chloe's goal is to get out - to get away from these so-called doctors who were trying to make her "better." It comes easy to Chloe, but not as easy as she would have liked. Having managed to hack into Dr. Davidoff's computer (with help from a ghost we're sure to meet in the next installment), Chloe learns the fate of those like her - if they show no sign of improvement, of figuring out how to control their powers, they are terminated. According to his records, though, Chloe and Derek are different - their fate unknown.

Chloe and Tori manage to escape the institution with help from Liz's ghost and Tori's spells - and no help from Tori's mother, Mrs. Enright, who saw right through Chloe's reasoning to help the Edison Group on their mission to find Derek and Simon. Tori and Chloe attempt to part ways at this point - Tori saying she'd rather go back to her father, who knows nothing of her powers. Here we get to see some emotion on this strong, and usually scheming, character - her dad ends up calling her mom, who comes to meet her instead, to bring her back to the Edison Group. Now, Tori has no choice but to stay with Chloe.

The girls take up shelter in a shed and wait for Derek and Simon (who left a very clever drawing of graffiti on a building for them). That night, Chloe manages to raise the soul of a dead bat, turning it into a zombie bat. While at first I thought this was a useless part of information, if showed the reader one thing - Chloe needs to know how her powers work and how to control them.

Eventually Derek and Simon show up and the four of them set off to find a friend of the boys' father, Andrew, who can help them get Rachelle and Aunt Lauren out of the institution. Their journey is met with plenty of adventures, from Chloe accidentally creating another zombie while dreaming to Chloe and Derek meeting more werewolves. The action is never-ending throughout this novel, which is great for the reader - it makes for a real page-turner. Tori is her usual self, but throughout the book her and Chloe get to like each other slightly more. Dereck learns to control his emotions around Chloe, and to tolerate Tori.

There seems to be a hint of romance in this book and it reminds me of the Edward/Jacob issue in Twilight - will readers go for Simon? Or will they turn towards Derek? Throughout the book, Simon is the one who is quieter, more like Chloe, and is always thinking that Derek won't know how to control his emotions. Derek, on the other hand, shares many moments with Chloe - his second encounter with turning into a werewolf, being one big one - and gets more personal with her, sharing stories of his childhood. Chloe starts to feel a "funny feeling" in her stomach when she's around Derek - something that never comes into fruition in this book, but romance-lovers will probably jump at the chance to see who Chloe picks in the third book.

By the end of the book, they are found by the Edison Group again, and are trying to escape. The four managed to find Andrews house, but it was abandoned - similar to when Simon and Derek's dad left suddenly when they were younger. They manage to escape, again, from the Edison Group, but only with the help of Andrew - the Edison Group's one hostage - who takes off with the EG's van to rescue our main characters.

We are left with a cliffhanger, but also a sense of resolution - the group found Andrew - and now Armstrong has set up the premise for the next installment: Get back to the institution and rescue Rachelle and Aunt Lauren from their evil clutches. And will there be any development in the love triangle in the next book? We'll have to wait and find out!

I had a hard time getting through the first book, and wasn't sure if I wanted to complete the series, but am I ever glad I continued. This book was hard to put down. If you have read the first book and are unsure if you should read on in the series, DO IT! It gets better!

Mini Book Review: Once again Kelley has me hooked from the very first page to the very last sentence and leaves me excited about reading the next book in the series. Non stop action, intriguing and well developed characters & some dark humour this time which was a nice added bonus. Some questions answered but even more left to figure out. Kelley is truly a natural born storyteller. Liked the addition of a couple of adult characters that were not total dbags. A pretty good transitional second book, often the 2nd book is a bit dull, but not this one. Will be cracking open the next book as soon as I get home tonight -- didn't bring it with me to work today because I knew I would be too tempted to read it instead of getting work done. Nice to see the development of the secondary characters with some back story. Also found myself liking Chloe more and love the dialogue between her and Tori.

Following Chloe in this second book of the Darkest Powers trilogy was so much fun.

We get to see Chloe struggling with new information about her and along with Derek and Simon and Tori, travel from town to town to get to the only person they know that could get them a safe shelter and give them some explanations.

Along the road and some misfortune incidents, we get to see another Chloe. A girl that's struggling to keep that good old girl behavior she had, while everything around her keeps changing and she finds herself changing as well. She gets more aggressive and more independent. She starts loosing trust in almost everyone expect from the two brothers that promised her that they will keep her safe.

This was so much better than the first book. There is more action going on and we see another side of Tori I thought it never existed. In the first book I hated her but now I feel sorry for her. Derek seems to talk more now that they are on the run and Chloe getting to test her limits. Something she never thought of in her previous secure life.

Kelley Armstrong managed to deliver a sitting-on-the-edge book with quick passing pages that doesn't make you bored at all. I couldn't guess what will happen next and that's a plus! It wasn't predictable at all!
Overall I would say go grab the book now!

The Awakening is the second book in the Darkest Power series.

Kelley Armstrong has not let us down in this second instalment. Taking off right where we left off from the first book, Chloe is finally getting some answers and putting them to productive use instead of the all kinds of crazy uncertainty she was feeling before. As we already know, Chloe is a necromancer, meaning she can raise the dead and communicate with them, but not always on purpose. She's still getting the handle on her powers that apparently are much stronger than other necromancers. Her friends from Lyle house also have supernatural abilities and also seem to be stronger than others of their kind. For the time being, the girls are separated from Simon and Derek. Chloe, Rae and Tori are locked up in some extra fancy padded rooms and the boys are still on the run. Chloe wants nothing more than to escape to find Derek and Simon so they can all get to a safe spot away from the mwahaha-type scientists and doctors who are part of the Edison Group. Chloe stumbles over some scary life altering facts about herself and her supernatural group of friends. As you would expect, that just lights Chloe's fire even more to get her butt out of her nut pad. With some plotting, she actually gets out with some unexpected and unwanted baggage. Chloe and her group have to run an obstacle path from hell to safety in New York. With a necromancer, werewolf, a witch and a warlock on the run, you can imagine it won't be an easy task running from a crazy medical team and their families to save their endangered lives.

Not worry though, its not all work and no play. We get some serious one on one time with Chloe and Derek. Who doesn't love the nice, good-hearted, yet romantically dense girl unknowingly falling for the misunderstood, smart and strong guy? Its just too freakin cute to watch them deny the amounting attraction to each other. And, of course, Simon's not to be forgotten since he has his own little puppy love crush going on to muck up the works. The paranormal factor mixed with the right amount of underlying teenage drama makes this series a worthwhile read. The pace stays smooth and intriguing and this instalment to the Darkest Power series has a lot more action to offer up compared to the first book. Great read.

The second book in the Darkest Powers series is just as engaging as the first, more creepy action and a more Derek. I am in love with this boy, I wanna go in the book and drop kick Chloe, so she can see what she is missing. I will say they have a lot of scenes alone together and they make me very happy.

For all y'all who don't know Chloe is a new discovered necromancer ( able to awaken the dead), first she thought she was schizo but it was discovered that the home she was sent to after experiencing seeing a ghost, were finding ways to harvest her powers. Well after breaking loose, Chloe and her entourage are now on the run. We have Tori the sarcastic rich girl, Simon the ever so sweet gentleman, Derek the leader and authority figure of the group, and of course sweet and naïve Chloe.

Its interesting to see these very young people go out and fend for themselves. They no longer can call parents for help because they might be placed in danger, some are the bad guys and others have already gone missing. Everyday is a journey of survival and new realities. Plus this foursome bring the laughs and good times.

Kelley Armstrong is able to grab the reader and never let go, the relationships are real and very sweet. I am blown away by how a guy described as being ugly, can come off as the sexiest being, I am truly lusting after Derek. What this book lacks is romance but it is there if you manage to read between the lines. Overall a action packed book, with creepy dead things and just a pure thrilling ride.

Peeved- They talk about a necklace and I have yet to see the significance, all I know is the color has changed.

This is the second book in the Darkest Powers Trilogy.
Once you read this, you will definitely anticipate The Reckoning!

    Plot: (Warning: may contain Spoilers!)

Chloe is stuck in a "love triangle". She begins to have feelings for Derek, a boy with a special gift of transformation (not saying into what :P haha). . . however, at the same time his step brother with a completely different gift named Simon has strong feelings for Chloe. They are on the run along with other teens they have escaped with.

Why are they running away and why are they so afraid to turn back?
The answer is waiting for you!!!

This book had all the great qualities that I liked previously in The Summoning. It certainly did live up to its standards and I nearly ate up the entire novel in one sitting. It was so interesting and the plot went by so fast that it just kept me turning the pages to figure out what was going to happen next. It certainly was consistent and it flowed. There weren't any interruptions to hinder the plot or that deviated away from the main story. Which is nice to see. Usually you do get at least two or three (or insanely, even more) mini story arcs in novels nowadays that having this main one which focuses on Chloe was refreshing to read and easy to follow. It helps too, that it was told through Chloe's point of view since she is very central to the story.

The characters are the same, although you do see a potential love triangle forming (I'm for Derek to win this one..you have to go for the underdog, Simon's too...good). The tension between Derek, Chloe and Simon is there, but between Chloe and Derek, it's just, almost electrifying. I think they seem perfect for each other, Chloe needs that protection and Derek provides it for her like a protective blanket. Tori, as usual, is still her annoying self, in fact even twice as annoying and really really snotty. She's the type of character you're forced to put up with, and I'm really surprised Chloe didn't raise an army of zombies to chase Tori of the face of this earth.

The ending of this book wasn't left in much of a cliffhanger as The Summoning, yet it still left me with a great interest in the next one (The Reckoning which has just been released). I wonder though, there's still a lot of questions left unanswered and now I'm wondering if one last book is enough to explain everything. It just seems like a very long explanation(s) are left to do. I could be wrong when I get my hands on The Reckoning!

Overall, it definitely lives upto its predecessor. If you haven't already, read The Summoning and onto this one! it's certainly a great trilogy so far and one of the best I've read at the moment.

The second book in the Darkest Powers trilogy. This is my second time reading this one and I think I enjoyed it more than the first. I really liked the quick paced action and the writing style. This is written for the young adult genre, though I would recommend it to any age. 78/1000

The story picks up where it left off from the previous one and I really like how she automatically captivates you from the beginning. You're in the middle before you know it.

The middle of the book is consistent with action. You get a good feel of what the characters are capable of. There is way more Derek than anticipated but you get to know what he's about more in this one than the previous one. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but Chloe seemed to be a liability from time to time which is okay, I guess, from a story's perspective but I got annoyed sometimes. But it's minor detail.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's different from most books in a way that it deals with more friendship than romance. And the plot is different than most books. I'd recommend it. I'd also recommend reading the first one before reading this one.

    Enjoy the book.

If you haven't read the first one you may not want to read this review. If you do that's great.

This story starts right where the last one ends. Chloe is now in the hands of the Edison group, the group that run the Lyle house. She's trapped there like a experiment with Rae and Tori, who did not run away from the Lyle house when the rest of them had. They begin asking her where Simon and Derek are since they have seemed to have gotten away. But Chloe isn't falling for it. Chloe lives there for a while trying to find a way out. One day Dr. Davidoff leaves Chloe in a room, she breaks out and uses his computer, finding out that they are genetic modifications designed to reduce their power. She also finds out when the subjects aren't working out that they kill them. She also finds out that Liz, her friend from the Lyle house and the ghost that keeps coming back to her, has been killed along with another boy from the house. She tries to tell Rae what's going on but she doesn't believe her, she thinks that the boys have brained washed Chloe into believing that the Edison group is evil.

Finally seeing her way out she takes it, along with Tori , trying to find the boys. Hiding in a warehouse she finds a picture Simon drew, indicating when they would be back. The boy find them, though they are not to happy that Tori is there with her. They set out to find Simon and Derek's dad's friend who should be able to help them on their journey of finding their dad and getting help. Along the way they come through some dangerous things. Chloe can't help raising the dead as she sleeps and there something wrong with Derek and only Chloe knows what. The journey becomes even harder when Chloe's dad puts a reward out to find her. So now she has to change her appearance. Tori's mom and the Edison group is looking for them and will stop at nothing to get them. They've gone to the extremes before, what would stop them now?

So this is the second book in the Darkest Powers series. This one was good, and there's a lot more character development. You start to see the real Derek, and how it affects the relationship with Chloe. The characters have to grow up and learn how to deal with this alone and Kelley Armstrong did a very good job showing that. Though this book wasn't as good as the Summoning it was still really good.

I read The summoning and the Awakening in a day, I could not put them down and I didnt want to wait to read the next, so I just picked it up (the hubby wasnt happy lol)
This picks up right where the first left off and it shows alot about friendship, companionship, trust, and understanding. I love Derrik, and Chloe. Simon is great, but something about him bugs me. Tori is fun...lol. I can not wait for the next one. :)
I agree, that your neighbours house could explode and you wouldnt even flinch, but a few scenes in this book will make you (again with the kinda creepy, but in a good way )

The second book in the Darkest Powers series picks up right where the last one ended. and while I enjoyed this romp with Chloe, Derek, Simon, Tori, and Rae, it was missing something that armstrong captured in the first book. Or maybe it's just my penchant to like the first book in a series best.

We see Chloe struggle to get a hold of her powers (trying not to raise animal zombies), and the beginning of a love triangle bloom (Derek and Simon are both so cute in their over-protective natures).

I did like the nod to the characters in Armstrong's Otherworld seresi, although the two are definately not for the same target audience.

Can't wait for the next book to see what is in store for our group of misfits.
