I first picked up "The Amulet of Samarkand" from a friend who does not read. Seven years ago this summer I have owned that book, and every year I have read it at least twice. Jonathan Stroud weaves a vivid tapestry that is full of vibrant and clear description, amazing imagery, and wit.
The same things can be said about the other two books in the trilogy, although with "The Golem's Eye" and "Ptolemy's Gate" the story gets darker, the characters more serious, and the city gloomier.
The world that Jonathan Stroud creates in this trilogy is one that you can't help but want to live in. Pregnant with magic, intrigue, suspense, and excitement, the universe that Bartimaeus belongs to is one that I will definitely explore again and again, and pass along to my children.

This series definitely has a different take on magic in an almost humbling sort of way (for humans, anyways).
Bartimaeus is a wonderful character; full of wit, sarcasm and fantastic humour. I also like the style in which the books are written. I'd recommend this to readers of all ages. (Though perhaps not lazy readers as the books themselves are rather large) :)

You will love this book. Bartimaeus will have you on the floor laughing. With his witty commentary, ancient memory, and growing hatred of his magician masters.
