Doubleday Canada | April 1, 1988 | Mass Market Paperbound

At twenty-nine Valancy had never been in love, and it seemed romance had passed her by. Then a letter arrived from Dr. Trent, and Valancy decided to throw caution to the winds. For the first time in her life Valancy did and said exactly what she wanted. Soon she discovered a surprising new world, full of love and adventures far beyond her most secret dreams.

This will always be my favorite of Montgomery's books. I loved the characters and I cheered for Valancy from the start. There is tragedy, but in places it's laugh-out-loud funny.

A book I return to whenever I need cheering up, I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a bit of an effort to find, but you won't regret it.

I was told by a few people to read Montgomery's only adult novel and I must tell you, that I thoroughly enjoyed it. As much as I adore Montgomery's Emily and Anne novels, it was kind of refreshing to see what she would do with an adult protagonist. At twenty-nine Valancy is considered by her family to be an old maid. Her home is constricting and creatively dead until she finds out that she might actually be dying and thus decides to throw caution to the wind and live. The characters in the book are absolutely charming. The prose is witty and I found myself clearly immersed in Montgomery's intricately woven story.

    One of My Favortie Books

I borrowed this book from a friend when I was around 12 and loved it. I read again before giving it back and it has become one my favorite books. I'm a big fan of L.m. Montgomery and think this is one of her best books. They way Montgomery describes her characters and setting is amazing. The main character Valancy is tranformed by the end of the chraming book to find true love. The same year I read the book I had a reading comprehension test with an excerpt from the Blue Caslte about the rose bush, I couldn't believe it!! I've been trying for some time to find a hardcover copy of this book like my friends. My mom had one that was my Grandma's from the 1940s but her cousin borrowed it and never gave it back. This is a rare gem that should be read by more people.

Employee Review Jamie from Chapters # 910, Winnipeg, MA

This Montgomery novel is surprisingly funny. Valancy is an old maid, and has been meek all her life. But at the age of 29, her doctor tells she has only a year to live. From this point on, she decides to please herself and no one else. She proceeds to tell everyone off -- and have a hell of a lot of fun. This would be a great book for any Montgomery fan!

About the Author

One of the best-loved children's/young adult authors, Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874 in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of Hugh John and Clara Woolner. After attending Prince of Wales College and Dalhouse College in Halifax, she became a certified teacher, eventually teaching in Bideford, Prince Edward Island. She also served as an assistant at the post office and as a writer for the local newspaper, The Halifax Daily Echo. Best known for her Anne of Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables books, Montgomery received many high honors. She was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1923 and a Canadian stamp commemorates Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. In addition, various museums dedicated to the book series and Montgomery's life dot Prince Edward Island. The books in the Anne series follow the growth and adventures of a red-haired, spritely, high-spirited and imaginative orphan named Anne who lives on Prince Edward Island. The success of these books rested in Montgomery's ability to vividly recollect childhood and her easy storytelling ability. They are tremendously popular to this day and have been translated into more than 35 languages and adapted as movies and PBS television productions. On July 5, 1911, L.M. Montgomery married Ewan Macdonald, a Presbyterian minister, and the marriage produced three children. She died on April 24, 1942.
