It's just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist-books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Junior Advisor's Review

Junior Booklover Braden Lunn from Calgary, Alberta.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is a classic tale about love and loss set in Nazi Germany on the brink of the Second World War. The Book Thief is told through the eyes of a nine year-old girl, Liesel Meminger, as she tries to distinguish right from wrong. As Liesel grows up, she is taught to worship the Fuhrer and the purity he is striving to achieve, but she continually witnesses the horrors and destruction being left in his wake.
The Book Thief is a superbly written novel that will find its place in history as one of the greatest novels of our time. The Book Thief is a true masterpiece written with amazing emotion and imagery that will give readers a remarkable, awe-inspiring gaze into the lives of those who not only had to live under the Fuhrer's rule, but also had to deal with the discrimination and propaganda that became part of their everyday lives.
