I read this entire series so quickly that I don’t even remember when the story in The Calling began and where it ended. Kelley Armstrong’s writing is so fluid and stream-lined through out her series that it’s so easy to read them in quick succession. I do think it’s slightly a problem if I can’t remember what happened in this book. I had to quickly skim through it before I wrote this review so that I’d remember most of the details. As a second book, this one’s no Twin Towers. It falls short of the first and the third, but it’s still really enjoyable. For me, the characters were flatter. The growth that was in the first book was kind of at a stand-still for me in the second book, but this one was more focussed on the story and the characters trying to figure out their powers, how to use them, and figure out what they’re supposed to do. It’s kind of a quest situation: get back home after being flown away from a giant forest fire, only to find out that their identities have been erased by the company running their town, and that a mysterious rival company is trying to kidnap them. Daniel finds out he’s a benedanti and that St. Clouds, the medical company running their old town, is trying to resurrect extinct supernatural species. I really liked this concept because these abilities are totally different than anything in any other paranormal/supernatural book I’ve read so far in the genre. The author takes everything one step further, amps up the suspense, mystery, and the weirdness. Maya is also able to explore her abilities more as a skin-walker. We also hear them mentioning the old cast from The Darkest Powers trilogy. My heart jumped out of my chest when I read that they were going to look for these characters. I miss Chloe and Derek so much!! Oooh and they’re still in Canada! Woot woot! These characters are also insanely good at getting out of sticky situations. They’re really determined and headstrong. They make lots of mistakes, but they’re able to fix them and move on, which I like. However, it didn’t feel like much happened in this book other than them trying to find their way home and being captured a bunch of times. While it was exciting while I read it, in retrospect I wish there was something that Kelley could have added to make this book more unique from the first and third books in this trilogy. Plus there definitely wasn’t enough romance in this one!

The calling was great! Even after I didn't remember everything from the first book, I still understood the stuff from the second one! I loved the way the plot folded out and how the characters delt with the things in their paths. I loved the way you were still learning character traits about the characters. The speed of the plot was great but I would have maybe have something go right for the characters so you don't see everything coming. ;D

Maya and friends are taking off to get out the fire of their town...chaos is on all sides and she does not know who is really helping them or helping themselves. Being hunted through the temperate forests of Vancouver Island, no civilitization in sight. What are they running from or into? Will they make it out alive? Will her secret be revealed? Will she ever see her family again? Follow Maya's quest for survival with her friends (and fri-enemies) from the St. Cloud Corporation. Looking forward to the final installment of this trilogy

well i must say the end was awsome love how kelly is putting both sires together like that and this is a must read and i wish that her and dan would be together 100 thumbs up

Another gem written by one of today's most prolific writers. I enjoyed right from the opening page and cannot wait to see where Ms Armstrong takes her characters from here.

This second continuation for The Darkness Rising trilogy is even better than the first! I love how Kelly described the characters and every page was filled with detail! It has everything that The Gathering fans devoured in the first book and even more! When I first finished The Gathering last year, I was EXTREMELY excited to read The Calling when it was released, but unfortunately that spirit faded after about 5 months. So when my mom picked up The Calling for me, I had kind of forgotten about it, but was happy (just not as excited as I would have been before). About a quarter through the book, I got back into the whole scheme of this series, and that spark of excitement came back. I am really happy I had the chance to read The Calling, and hopefully the author makes a third book, (which I would definitely be picking up). All-around fantastic book. Great job Kelly C;

Starting at exactly the point The Gathering’s cliff-hanger left off we rejoin Maya and the other teens on their flight from Salmon Creek. The group finds themselves abandoned after the helicopter crash and on the run from both sides of the law. Things start to happen as far as their “altered” genetics so they must face those changes as well. The finally make it back t Salmon Creek only to find they are more alone than ever in their quest to find out what is happening to them. Again, being a fan I enjoyed the book.

I read the Darkness Rising series, and the Gathering, the Calling follows the same basic flow and pattern so if you liked Kelley's past novels you will love this one. I do have to say, as a teenager living near Vancouver owning a German Shepard, strangely enough named Kenjii too, I found this series a tad funny. But there was a few things that drove me crazy because I know the area better than the author so I found every mistake. Like a mountain on the island? It's a hill, no BC person would ever call it a mountain. The novel was awesome, but if you live near the setting, try to forget where it is suppose to take place.

The Calling was a wonderful follow up to the Gathering. It was action packed, took you deeper into the story and characters and I just really enjoyed it. My only issue is that I have to wait for the next book. Well done, Kelley! Her novels should be adapted to film. Just saying.

The Good Stuff Kelley is a truly gifted storyteller - she sucks you in from the first very paragraph and has you wanting more at the end Maya is a truly enchanting realistic character. She has flaws, but she grows and tries her best Fabulous dialogue and dry humour So much character development goes into each and every character - all very distinct Plenty of twists and turn & OMG moments I love the dog & whenever he is put in peril I am at the edge of my seat going no please don't hurt him The author really understands what it is to be young The world she has created is so fascinating She gives you a summary of the first book in the series for those new to the series without boring those who have read it Love that its set in B.C. - yes we Canadians love that stuff -- we have issues about being ignored The relationships between the friends on the run is honest and realistic The Not So Good Stuff Missed the parents in this one - they were cool and involved parents - that is so rare in YA books (Yes I am bitter LOL!) How long do I have to wait till next book - damn, this sucks reading these books so in advance of actually publication date (No not complaining - pls send me next ARC LOL!) Favorite Quotes/Passages "And if there are teenagers who actually respond to adults shouting at them, I've never met one." "Yes, you are. We just need to get this done, then you can have a breakdown. I'll join you." "Yes, ma'am." He leaned down toward my ear. " I like when you order me around. It's really hot." "Right." A soft, choked laugh. "Kind of ruins the dramatic effect if I'm storming off in the wrong direction, doesn't i." "You were saved by a girl. Horrible, isn't it?" He slid out and looked down at my bare legs. "Not just a girl, but a half naked one. Not that's hot. If I'm still unconscious, don't wake me, okay?" Who Should/Shouldn't Read Like most of Kelley's books, you could read this and not be lost from not having read the first book in the series -- but do yourself a favor and get the first boo Fabulous for both the teen and adult reader 5 Dewey's I received this from Random House in exchange for an honest review
