Interesting concept and well written but it lacked in character and story development. I haven't run out to get the next book in the series. I'm really not even sure if I will read the next one. The story progressed at an unrealistic pace and ended in a very anticlimatic way. This book lacked a lot in the way of follow through.

As a horror fan, this should be a novel on your wish list! Very scary yet so delightful to read, a few points had dragged on a bit too long. But need I warn you, you won't be able to put it down.

This was an amazing book! When you were reading the book, everything just seemed so real. It really made you look over your shoulder with fright. I had to read with lights on and blinds down. There was one scene in it that actually made my stomach queezie it seemed so real. A gread horror book for anyone. Cant wait to read the second one!

This book was so good I wanted to stay up at night to finish it. The prologue was so good and gripping that I had to continue reading it to see what would happen. The book had all the makings to become a horror movie itself. The writing was great and an easy read. It had very well written descriptions of horror scenes which is enough to put the reader on edge. Some parts were so well written I found myself reacting to it out loud while reading. Fear is the main theme here, and Reggie has a giant phobia of spiders. Naturally, there are many scenes which include spiders. I'm rather scared of spiders myself and I could just feel my skin crawl as I read the parts where Reggie is constantly terrorized by them. As said before, the horror scenes are excellent and picturing them isn't so hard. It brings the reader right into the book as if one was beside Reggie herself. I like Reggie. She's the typical horror heroine you find in horror movies. Strong, attempting to live life as normal as possible, until the Vours come in and turn her life upside down. Her friend Aaron is also, your typical side kick in a horror movie who is the brains and helps Reggie get to the bottom of understand and figuring out the Vours. Then there's Eben, who's the mysterious good guy but with a horrible secret. However, like any horror movie, it doesn't stop there. There is a second book out (called Soulstice) which I am definitely getting once I have the chance to. The Devouring is definitely worth reading if you feel like reading something creepy and terrifying. Yet, there are still questions to be answered. There is blood and gore in the book. So those that aren't partial to it should avoid this book. However those that want a scare should definitely pick this up. Overall, one of my favorite reads of this year. I am glad I picked this book up. I was pleasantly scared.

I want to say that i think it was terrible, but i cant call a book that (just doesnt seem right) Maybe it was the writting style, either way i had to force myself to read it. I thought the idea was awesome but the way the auther put it into words, didnt work for me XD

Fifteen year old Reggie (Regina) loves horror. From Bram Stoker to Stephen King, she eats up the books, the movies, everything about it. She lives off the things that go bump in the night-and a new type of horror, called Vours, have caught her eye. She saw it when she was stacking books in the used bookstore she works in part-time. A big, dingy-looking book, with THE DEVOURING written across it in spidery handwriting. And before she knew it, it was with her at home, and she was reading through it, confused at the insane rantings of the writer, about these creatures called Vours, how they apparently took your soul and sent it away, taking over your body. It was supposed to happen on Sorry Night-also known as the winter solstice. When night was long and fear was lurking just around the corner. The more scared you were, the easier it was for the Vours to come to you, to envelope you and take over your body completely, leaving you an empty shell that everyone recognized but nobody knew. Reggie is shocked when she finds out someone she loves has been taken over by a Vour-her own little brother. Reggie is suddenly determined to face all her fears and squash them under her heels as she goes to great lengths to save her brother and defeat these immortal, hundreds of thousands of years old demons, who will stop at nothing to jump out at her and literally scare her to death. The Devouring is one of those books that chill you to your very core. I made the mistake of reading parts before bed and was thinking about Vours before I went to sleep, yanking the covers over my head like a little kid. This book will scare you and delight you at the same time as it entertains you. It's frightening, interesting, and is the perfect pace. The characters are quirky and cool, and the fears are just that-fearful. This is definitely one of those books you should curl up under a blanket with on a snowy, early-winter night...make that day.

Okay, so there's these things called Vours, they're evils,demonic creatures and they feed off of peoples fears, and now they're taking over Regina's life. It all started when she came across an old diary called the Devouring at the book store she works at. She has always been into anything that involves horror, movies and books, so she decides to read the diary. She discovers that the diary is about these creatures called Vours that take over peoples bodies on Sorry Night, also known as the winter solstice, her and her best friend, Aaron, decide to see if they can attract these so called Vours. So, on Sorry Night they both face there biggest fears to see if that will work. Regina has a fear of spiders so to face her fear she lets on crawl all over her for one minute. Aaron has a huge fear of drowning, so his task is to stay under the water of Reginas hot tube for one minute, but he is not succsessful. So, after facing there greatest fears and having not attracted these creatures they declare that they do ot exist. But they were not the only ones in the house that night. Henry, Reginas little brother was up in his bedroom all by himself that night. A few nights before his sister had read to him some of the Devouring and so he was terrified to sleep that night. He was scared that the Vours would come for him on Sorry Night just like they did to the boy in the diary. When Henry gets out of bed that night and can't find anyone in the house he is forced to face one of his greatest fears of being all alone at night in a dark house, and this is when the darkness takes him. "When dark creeps in and eats the light, Bury your fears on Sorry Night. For in the winter's blackest hours Comes the feasting of the Vours. No one can see it, the life they stole, Your body's here but not your soul..." And this is the point where Reginas life beginnins to spin out of control. Her brother is no longer there, he may appear the same, but thats just his body his soul is gone and in its place lives a dark demonic creature. Now Regina has to find away to defet the creature and return her brothers soul to his body, but how do you do this when no one believes that anything wrong. This book was full of suspence and horror and will captivate you right from the first page, and leve you wanting more when it ends. One thing that I really liked about this book was that it was fast moving and always keept me captivated. I would recommend this book to any teens or young adults that loves horror, this book will not disapoint. And don't forget the second book, The Soulstice.

....WOW, this was a great read. I could actually feel Henry's, Reggie's and Aaron's terror. it was the best read I had all of summer. I was stuck doing dance practices all day that I did start hating dance a bit:P but at least I was able to enjoy this fabulous novel. Definitely recommend it to anyone that loves a great horror read. Talk about creepy! I started reading this and it instantly hooked me. I love a good scare and this one was very satisfying, I mean come on! Killer clowns, monsters and hordes of spiders, what more could you ask for? I couldn't read this book at night because I knew I would get paranoid. Haha. Great plot and characters, lots of twists and certainly not boring this novel is defiantly a keeper. Anxiously awaiting the sequel!

Scary as all hell, and downright disturbing in places. The Devouring is one of the freakiest books I've read in a long while, and while it feels a bit short, the reader won't close the book unsatisfied.
