by Salman Rushdie

Knopf Canada | April 20, 1999 | Hardcover

An epic romance that stretches across whole lives, and even beyond death, Salman Rushdie''s most accessible novel and his boldest imaginative act is also a vivid account of the intimate, flawed encounter between East and West, a remaking of the myth of Orpheus, and an exploration of the extremities of comedy, culture and desire. The Ground Beneath Her Feet is a gripping story that encapsulates the history, dreams and passions of the last half century as no other novel has done.

    Myth and Music

My first response to Salman Rushdie's "Ground Beneath Her Feet" was definitely mixed. I questioned the ways in which he attempts to link the mythology of diverse civilizations with the catastrophic modern world. He seems to almost make a farce out of classical mythology as he attempts to link characters who are so diverse as to be dynamic opposites. When I thought about it a little more, however, I realized that Rushdie's attempts were not in vain. The very nature of any said myth is supposed to constantly change, as contradictory as this sounds. Myths themselves may stay static, but their application to modern societies gives room for interpretation and manipulation. The brilliant ways in which Rushdie portrays his characters turn them into their own mythical presence. This magical transformation of "extraordinary" beings into mortals who live, suffer and die is truly ingenious on the part of Rushdie. The addition of music into the equation just enhances the "myth" that Rushdie actually creates. I would recommend this book to music and myth lovers alike. Others may find it to be a little too daring...but open to interpretation!

Much like Orpheus, Rushdie gets turned around in his descent into this novel of parallel universes, rock and doomed love. The plot line spurts and stops like the punctuated equilibrium theory and Rushdie's attempt at capturing the essence of rock and roll comes across like one of George Harrison's sitar solos, half-baked mimicry. Nonetheless, Rushdie's lyricism and intelligence still sets The Ground Beneath Her Feet head and shoulders above most of his peers' recent work.

Rushdie's new book is a big complex novel that stretches along cultural lines, comparing the secular to the religious, the ancient with modern, the real and the fantastic. The result is a very complicated affair that is well written, but also uneven. Rushdie takes on a lot in this book, and if he falls short it is only for ambition.

From Our Editors

A sprinkling of pop culture and a healthy dose of mythology make this best-selling novel by renowned novelist Salman Rushdie a wonderfully satisfying read. At its core, The Ground Beneath Her Feet is a love story weaving in and out of eastern and western traditions as events unfold in both India and the United States. Rushdie deftly draws each character and highlights the randomness of circumstance and fragility of life through natural disasters. Readers will appreciate the melange of historical fact and illusion in this spellbinding work.

From the Critics

"Dazzling--a wonderfully imagined and abundant novel about love and rock ''n'' roll, about India and the United States, about gods and mortals, and about this crazy world we live in.-- Sheer joy." -M.G. Vassanji, The Globe and Mail

"As absorbing as fiction can be -- and [from] one of our continent''s best writers." -Kirkus Reviews

"This is Rushdie at his absolute, almost insolently global best -- his adroit mastery of language serves brilliantly imagined characters and a mesmerizing narrative. Completely seductive." -Toni Morrison

"[An] exuberant and elegiac new novel...his best since Midnight''s Children." -The New York Times

"Brilliant...unabashedly ambitious, playful, arch." -The Toronto Star

"From start to finish, this massive novel is in every way major.--The writing is funny, silly, erudite, crude, precise, unbuttoned.--The fabulous and magical mix with the sordid and the profane; [the] plot is invariably advanced by catastrophe -- bizarre deaths and unexplained fires, multiple earthquakes.--Daring-- Extraordinary." -The Montreal Gazette

"Magnificent, monstrously inventive--The most playful of masterpieces." -Mirabella

"Salman Rushdie''s new novel is a wonderful storytelling beast that feeds on pop culture, misfit history and the persistence of myth. Rushdie''s epic range has never been more impressive. Here is a great novelist operating as a master of metamorphosis -- transforming life, art and language in the subterranean maze of his imagination." -Don DeLillo
