The Handmaid's Tale

by Margaret Atwood

Doubleday Canada | August 1, 1986 | Mass Market Paperbound

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, once the United States of America. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets, where pictures have replaced words because women are forbidden to read. Offred can remember a time before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. I usually don't read these kinds of books but now that I read this one I'm gonna start. I found this book very appealing. It was very entertaining to see this perspective of the future for women.
