The Heart Specialist

by Claire Holden Rothman

Cormorant Books | February 1, 2009 | Trade Paperback

Inspired by the life of Doctor Maude Elizabeth Seymour Abbott, The Heart Specialist is the story of an ambitious woman pursuing her dream at the dawn of the twentieth century. Agnes is stripped of a regular childhood when her father is accused of a horrific crime and abandons the family. Never considered ladylike, she is drawn to the "wrong" things, such as microscopes, anatomy, and dissection, that lead to her finding her calling as a doctor. Yet despite a rapid rise to stardom in the medical community, she soon finds herself up against the same glass ceiling faced by women in her field. Set against the backdrop of conflict and upheaval permeating the early 1900s, The Heart Specialist is a testament to one woman''s triumph in the face of adversity.

    A Great Read

Rothman conveys in a superb manner Agnes' feelings of being in no man's land. I like Agnes and I felt like cheering her on. I also like Jakob Hertzlich, her assistant, especially later on in the story; at first, he appeared snobbish (but only slightly, and with good reason). This book is well written and it is true to the times and settings of the story.

The Heart Specialist is the best literary novel I've read thus far this year. Even after I was done reading it, I was left to ponder about it. It's an enjoyable read with believable characters (although a particular part at the beginning might not be suitable for the faint of heart). It's a book with a grand message about humanity.

A wonderful read that brought us back to the Canada at early 1900s (WWI) following the strong willed female protagonist in her quest to practice medicine for such a male dominant profession back then. Beautiful portrayal of the academic environment, vivid description of the horrendous war, intricate images of hearts, the literal disease-ridden specimens sitting in preservatives and that beating and living with feelings and emotions within the characters. Highly recommended.
