The Historian

by Elizabeth Kostova

Little, Brown And Company | October 3, 2006 | Trade Paperback

To you, perceptive reader, I bequeath my history....Late one night, exploring her father''s library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor," and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of-a labyrinth where the secrets of her father''s past and her mother''s mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history. The letters provide links to one of the darkest powers that humanity has ever known-and to a centuries-long quest to find the source of that darkness and wipe it out. It is a quest for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the legend of Dracula. Generations of historians have risked their reputations, their sanity, and even their lives to learn the truth about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula. Now one young woman must decide whether to take up this quest herself-to follow her father in a hunt that nearly brought him to ruin years ago, when he was a vibrant young scholar and her mother was still alive. What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler have to do with the modern world? Is it possible that the Dracula of myth truly existed-and that he has lived on, century after century, pursuing his own unknowable ends? The answers to these questions cross time and borders, as first the father and then the daughter search for clues, from dusty Ivy League libraries to Istanbul, Budapest, and the depths of Eastern Europe. In city after city, in monasteries and archives, in letters and in secret conversations, the horrible truth emerges about Vlad the Impaler''s dark reign-and about a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive down through the ages.Parsing obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions-and evading the unknown adversaries who will go to any lengths to conceal and protect Vlad''s ancient powers-one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova''s debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions, a relentless tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present, with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful-and utterly unforgettable.

I love the vampire genre, but was looking for something fresh so i picked this up because it was so different from the usual. it was such a great read!! i couldn't put it down because of all the suspense and mystery surrounding the characters. i highly reccomend this book to anyone, it is appealing not because of the vampire backdrop but because it is such a well written and incredible book!!!

One of my favourite things to do is settle under a cozy blanket with a hot cup of tea for the afternoon with a good book. The feel of a thick book in my hands excites me and I always hope that I am not let down. This book will not let you down. While the theme of the story has reoccured with the undying tale of Dracula, this book creates a whole new look on the epic tale. I was immersed in this book within minutes of picking it up. The author`s main character is a father telling a story to his child, and I felt like I was the child the whole time. Waiting and looking forward to the next chapter in the story. Perfect for when you have the time to settle in for a few days to an intriguing read.

I do have to give praises to Kostova for her incredible research on Vlad the Impaler, however, I was disappointed about the novel's length. I bet if Vlad were alive, he would torture his victims by making them read this novel. It took six chapters (or 42 pages) for Paul to start telling his story! Six! Although the pages were brightly painted with vivid colours, the story dragged on with no end to boredom. There were days where I would look forward in doing my math homework than to read this novel.

On the other hand, the first time I read this novel (last year), I loved it only because I was skimming through the lines. At least two-thirds of the book were elegantly plotted, but the climax was rather too short or hard to pick up. I mean, would you calmly talk to a dead man who killed thousands of people for enjoyment? Oh joy. Kostova used beautiful words, but the emotions were monotone. There were even love scenes in the novel that shed no vibe. Additionally, the ending was too fast paced while the unimportant scenes dragged on.

All the characters (aside from all the boring historians who had no personality) were filled with awkward characteristics that made them disgustingly lovable. My personal favourite was the weasel-looking librarian who crept in the protagonist's shadows. If he were to exist in reality, I would gladly drink tea with him. Luckily, the vampire in The Historian did not sparkle or fall in love with a human girl. However, neither was he scary. Instead, he was a poor grandpa who roamed in his library reading books and stalking down historians.

In the end, The Historian is a great novel to read if you have a lot of time to spare or if you skim through it (like how I did last year). I would personally recommend reading it while listening to the audio because there are chances where you might fall asleep on top of your book. However, DO NOT USE THIS NOVEL FOR ENGLISH ASSIGNMENTS! You might pound your head against the wall trying to read and capture important quotes.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the writer of the review. I bought the book close to two years now and haven't been able to finish it. If you check my reading list you can see the proof of that. With regards to the comment that this review shouldn't be here. That is simply absurd. The reason we write reviews is to show people what we thought of the book. If everything is awesome about every book, what good is a list of reviews? Everyone loves everybook!!! Joan please restrain yourself from writing this things about peoples opinions...

I agree - I found it tedious and predictable, and I really don't understand the hype. Not my cup of tea.

This comment should never have been included. I think the person who wrote it doesn't care for this type of book and should stick to other types of literature. I found the story intriguing and hated to put it down. It was well written and absorbing for people who have a broad interest in authors and their works. Hurray! for the period novel.
