The Hobbit

by J.R.R. Tolkien

Harpercollins (uk) | May 5, 2008 | Trade Paperback

Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services - as a burglar - on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo?s life is never to be the same again.

The Hobbit became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and more than 60 years later Tolkien?s epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has lost none of its appeal.

Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of children?s fiction. Written by Professor Tolkien for his own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when published - it was the Harry Potter of its generation. With new Lord of the Rings movies around the corner, this special Children?s edition is designed to put the book back where it belongs - at the top of every child?s ?must-read? list.

    Wizard!

    John Soares

"Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold."

Adventure anyone? The Hobbit is a novel about Bilbo Baggins' journey through middle earth with 13 dwarves and a wizard. It may be a bit slow for some as descriptions are lengthy and plentiful. However if you're the kind of person that enjoys being able to sit back, close your eyes and escape to another world. This is the book for you.

This book is absolutely everything you need to make your imagination explode with awesomeness. I was reading it and couldn't let go. I hope more people will read this amazing story of a small Hobbit and the 13 dwarves. Super mega highly recommended!

This dramatized version of the hobbit was quite excellent. The 4 cassette - 4 hour presentation brought to us by the BBC has great characterization portrayed through the actors' talented voices. The only drawback to this production was some of the music between chapters which began to get a bit grating after awhile. Overall sound quality was very good. Highly recommended for that long drive in the car.
