The Hockey Sweater

by Roch Carrier
Illustrator: Sheldon Cohen
Translated by: Sheila Fischman

Tundra | March 1, 1984 | Hardcover

In the days of Roch's childhood, winters in the village of Ste. Justine were long. Life centered around school, church, and the hockey rink, and every boy's hero was Montreal Canadiens hockey legend Maurice Richard. Everyone wore Richard's number 9. They laced their skates like Richard. They even wore their hair like Richard. When Roch outgrows his cherished Canadiens sweater, his mother writes away for a new one. Much to Roch's horror, he is sent the blue and white sweater of the rival Toronto Maple Leafs, dreaded and hated foes to his beloved team. How can Roch face the other kids at the rink?

he Hockey Sweater is such a nice little childrens book that can melt the heart of any hockey fan no matter how old. The book is great for young people, the illustrations are adorable and there is some hockey history laid in the book as well. It is a nice look back on a semi-forgotten time and it is nice to introduce old-school hockey to the youngsters. I am going to read this book to my nephew once he is old enough and if that is not recommendation enough to get your hands on this book yourself, then I am lost for words.

This amusing story builds on our love of skating, rinks, hockey and wearing the sweater of our favourite team. Canadians share this heritage and this gives us a certain identity that transcends regional and language issues.

I first heard this story narrated by the Canadian Film Board, and was instantly charmed by it. It's a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone, child or adult alike.

In this beloved story, see what happens when a Toronto Maple Leaf sweater is sent to a young Montréal Canadien fan by mistake. Forced to wear it to the hockey rink - where everyone else wears Maurice "Le Rocket" Richard's red, white and blue - funny things start happening to the little boy. Young and old hockey fans will understand and empathize with Roch Carrier's classic Canadian story. Sheldon Cohen's delightful illustrations bring The Hockey Sweater vividly to life.
