The Host: A Novel

by Stephenie Meyer

Little, Brown And Company | May 6, 2008 | Hardcover

The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie''s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn''t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer''s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body''s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she''s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    An amazing storyline

Personally I thing the writing and the imaginative storyline is her best work even though it's not as well known as her twilight series. The intrigue and suspense are riveting, and it's so easy to become attached to a majority of the characters, especielly Wanderer, (aka Wanda) Jamie, Mel and Jarod. It's a great idea about humans overcoming the worst odds, and their ability to adapt even in the face of being wiped out by an invasive alien race.

So I found this book very difficult to get into and after reading almost 100 pages I just put it down. I am the type of person who can't not finish a book, so about a year later I decided I NEEDED to finish it. I picked it up where I had left off and was engrossed in it immediately. I am not sure if the book is actually hard to get into or if I was just not in the right mood when I started it, but this book turned out to be one of my favourite books! You absolutely fall in love with the characters and the plot. The story is so unique and well written that I could not put it down. Needless to say I am very glad I chose to finish this book.

    Not what I expected

When I picked up my copy of The Host, I didn't have high expectations. I assumed Meyer was a one trick pony, and this would be a formulaic re-write of Twilight - Boy was I wrong! As it turns out, this is the most original sci-fi/love story ever imagined, and has taken it's rightful place as one of my favorite stories ever. Meyer may never win any literary awards for her writing, but few authors can evoke emotion and make you fall hopelessly in love with their characters like she can. I will revisit this story for years to come.

I couldn't stand this book. After loving the Twilight series and getting through those books in a day or two (by not sleeping!) I just couldn't get into this book. Some parts are just plain boring and it didn't make alot of sense. I've tried three times to pick it up and finish it and just can't, it feels like punishment!! I don't think I'll ever finish it.

I felt the same way, I got 100 pages in and just couldn't finish it. BUT about a year later I picked it up again and FLEW through it, the rest of the book was amazing! Trust me on this, it is worth continuing. It turned out to be one of my favourite books.

To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to read The Host at first, even though I am a HUGE fan of Twilight, simply because the plot was about aliens. I didn't know how I felt about that. :$ But sooo many of my friends raved about it that I just HAD to read it! And thank God I did because it is AMAZING. I couldn't put it down once I started! I love the world Stephenie Meyer created through this book; it was definitely worth the buy!

I would first of all like to say, I am proud to be a part of chapters, and their quick deliveries I admire, going back to this book, I would agree that this author's reputation in my school went down due to twilight, but that didn't stop me from giving this book a chance and i'm glad I did. It was simple amazing and was the first book ever to make me sad. I actually cried!! because of this book and that surprised me, it was new for me to cry but it just showed how real and good this was. It made me doubtful and I actually was against my own species at a point, shifting back and forth between Wanderer and Melanie. This book is great forget what people may think about twilight, go right ahead and dive into this, let the tears fall, 'cos I wasn't ashamed of crying. SUMMARY: NICE!!

This book really looks into the behavior of human beings, from an outsiders view, in this case an alien's. Beautifully written.

Yeah, yeah, it's the same author as Twilight... but if you read the series (or swear not to), forget your prejudices, good or bad and just go on and read the Host, I'm pretty sure it's enjoyable to a vast audience. Surprisingly different from her most acclaimed saga (if not looking too deeply) and very pleasant.

I was so surprised by Stephanie Meyer, this book was not what I was expecting, it was WAY better! I was doubtful when I read the first few pages that it was something I was going to like, but once I got past the first chapter I could not put it down!

Meyer has done it again! I love how the main character has been captured by an alien race and refuses to lose. The story is compelling and there's a hint of romance in here. Honestly, if a sequel comes out, I'll be first in line to get it.

The Host is a real departure from Meyer's Twilight series. Meyer has set aside her vampires to give us a solid sci-fi thriller. What a relief! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Twilight, but after four books of Bella, I was getting a bit overloaded. The Host is riveting. I could not put it down. In fact, it's over 600 pages and I read it in a day.

In this story, a parasitic alien race, who refer to themselves as 'Souls', has taken over the planet, using humans as hosts. While for the most part, the planet has been overrun, there are still pockets of 'wild' humans, i.e. humans that have not become hosts, that try and live under the radar to prevent capture.

The story follows Wanderer, a Soul who has been recently inserted inside a human host. Wanderer was chosen for this specific host because of her experiences on eight different worlds. It was thought that a more experienced Soul was necessary because of the way this host was 'acquired'. Melanie Stryder, the host, had been living 'wild' as part of the human resistance. Rather than face capture, she chose to die a violent death. Unfortunately for Melanie, the aliens were able to save her and using their superior healing, mend her broken body, making her a viable host.

While Wanderer immediately takes control of Melanie's body, the posession does not go smoothly. Resistance by a Host is usually rare, but Melanie makes her presence known to Wanderer almost immediately and the two battle with each other for the upper hand. Wanderer's job is to report any intel that she learns about the human resistance from Melanie but Melanie makes it difficult for her to do so. Wanderer may control her body, but Melanie's thoughts and memories are still her own and she puts them to good use bombarding Wanderer with memories and emotions of the life stolen from her but keeping any information that would endanger her loved ones locked away.

Impatiently waiting for information from Wanderer, is a Seeker. The Seeker's job is to hunt down rebel humans and she knows that Melanie's mind should have clues to find the resistance. Both Wanderer and Melanie take an instant disliking to the Seeker and this common enemy allows the two to develop a tentative friendship. While Melanie continues to use what power she has, in the form of dreams and memories, to gain Wanderer's attention and sympathy, Wanderer is already feeling somewhat sympathetic and guilty about what her people have done. Spurred on by their now shared feelings for the two people Melanie had to leave behind, Wanderer and Melanie set out to find them.

Using clues from Melanie's memories, Wanderer is able to find a band of human rebels, led by Melanie's Uncle Jeb. The bulk of the story features Wanderer's captivity with the rebels and what follows is a story about what it is to be human, about identity and about individualism. Most of all The Host is a story about the nature of love. Romantic love, love of family, love of friends - all of these emotions are explored by Wanderer as she is first overwhelmed by Melanie's emotional memories then succumbs to the emotions herself. All in all The Host makes for compelling reading. Avoiding the obvious sci-fi clichés it concentrates on humanity and the human emotions experienced by an alien invader who really wants to be human.

Like every teenage girl who actually reads books and dreams about Edward Cullen, I was compelled to pick up Stephenie Meyer's hefty new tale. I roughly knew that I couldn't expect another vampire-human girl awkward-romance thing (from what I've heard) so I was definitely curious. Overall, that curiousity was quickly satisfied when I found out that Meyer can actually write (better than the teen saga). Anyways, I thought it was a cool concept and well thought out. Don't worry there's some love in there for you too! Although I perhaps wanted to see a more tragic ending, a happy one works too! Give it a read if you want to give your head a rest from the screaming twi-fans, it will give you some room to breathe.

    Tale of the body snatchers

Once again, Stephanie Meyers creates a fantastic world where the unlikeliest of species survive in harmony. Or do they?... If you are a fan of the Twilight series you may not be a fan of this one, at first. The story of an alien invasion may not be everyones idea of a great story. Keep an open mind to the possibilities, but not too open or you could be next.

Wanderer is an alien parasite who is transplanted into a human host body. This will be the ninth planet her soul has lived on. She tries to fulfill her calling as a University Instructor, while struggling with the conscience of her host, Melanie.

The Seekers are the peace keepers of the soul communities, however Wanderer knows there is something not right about hers. No Soul would be so hostile and violent. Wanderer is compelled to help her fellow souls and will do what is needed for the greater good. When she starts seeing Melanie's memories of a long lost boyfriend, Jared, and brother, Jamie, she notifies the Seeker immediately.

Fearing that there may be something wrong with her host, Melanie's conscience should no longer exist, Wanderer decides to go see her original Healer. While driving through the desert, the landscape starts to resemble some of Melanies memories and the stories from her crazed Uncle Jeb. Wanderer sets out through the desert in a search for Jared and Jamie. Feeling Melanie's love for them, Wanderer needs to see them too. The Seeker is following Wanderer and will not give up her quest to find and catch more humans.

I really like the Twilight series, so I figured out I might like some other writings by Stephenie Meyer. At the beginning I was sort of disappointed because it was really difficult for me to get into the story; you have to read about 100 boring pages, but from that moment on, the story starts getting absolutely thrilling, and you realize that the hundred pages or so you read unwillingly were worth it.
Can't say I liked it better than Twilight, but The Host was an amazing novel, and you totally fall in love with the characters.
