The Host: A Novel

by Stephenie Meyer

Little, Brown And Company | May 6, 2008 | Hardcover

The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie''s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn''t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer''s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body''s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she''s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    An amazing storyline

Personally I thing the writing and the imaginative storyline is her best work even though it's not as well known as her twilight series. The intrigue and suspense are riveting, and it's so easy to become attached to a majority of the characters, especielly Wanderer, (aka Wanda) Jamie, Mel and Jarod. It's a great idea about humans overcoming the worst odds, and their ability to adapt even in the face of being wiped out by an invasive alien race.

So I found this book very difficult to get into and after reading almost 100 pages I just put it down. I am the type of person who can't not finish a book, so about a year later I decided I NEEDED to finish it. I picked it up where I had left off and was engrossed in it immediately. I am not sure if the book is actually hard to get into or if I was just not in the right mood when I started it, but this book turned out to be one of my favourite books! You absolutely fall in love with the characters and the plot. The story is so unique and well written that I could not put it down. Needless to say I am very glad I chose to finish this book.

Reading the Twilight series the first time around, I loved it because of its story. Attempting to read it a second time proved fruitless, as I realized that Stephenie Meyer could not write worth the pen she uses. Reading this particular novel, her only novel to date outside said series, I was given renewed hope that maybe she wasn't as terrible as I made her out to be. This is an intriguing novel about an alien who is supposed to help her kind to take over the human world, but turns to love the human she is inserted with and other humans that kept me from sleep for a couple of nights while I finished it. Meyer's writing has much improved in her fourth novel since her first. Based on this, I do intend to read any future novels that are published.
