I discovered this when it first came out, and felt that thrill of being on to something before others even suspected. The stories are great, and feel fresh. Maritimers will recognize scenes and experiences from our own lives, as RM spent some time in Fredericton, NB. I've been exceited to follow his career since.

From the Publisher

The astonishing stories in The Interloper capture the moment when ambivalence floods the new immigrant’s consciousness. Regret and nostalgia take turns overwhelming and being overwhelmed by rosy expectations, and only drastic measures stave off paralysis and ruin.

From the Jacket

Rabindranath Maharaj’s stories capture the whiplash emotions of immigrants — excitement, nostalgia, hope, terror, the self-consciousness of the outsider. But, profoundly sympathetic as he is towards his characters, Maharaj is alert to the human frailties they carry with them wherever they go. His irreverence strikes Trinidad and Canada, Christianity and Hinduism, Fredericton’s miniature order and Toronto’s trackless suburbs with equal vigour.

About the Author

Rabindranath Maharaj, a Trinidadian teacher and journalist, wrote several of the stories in The Interloper during the year he spent in Fredericton. He now writes and teaches in Toronto.

“Maharaj cracks open the worn shells of words like ‘immigrant,’ ‘racism,’ and ‘discrimination,’ releasing acutely angled stories that are wise, witty, watchful, sceptical of received opinion and deeply humane.” — Don McKay
