The Last Place On Earth

by Roland Huntford
Introduction by: Paul Theroux

Random House Publishing Group | September 15, 1999 | Trade Paperback

In this gripping dual biography, Huntford reexamines every detail of the great race to the South Pole between Britain''s Robert Scott and Norway''s Raoul Amundsen. Scott, who died along with four of his men only 11 miles from his next cache of supplies, became Britain''s beloved failure while Amundsen, who not only beat Scott to the Pole but returned alive, was largely forgotten. A brilliant and highly readable history which captures the driving ambitions of the era and the complex, often deeply flawed, men who were charged with carrying them out.

    Great Book

A gripping story of the race between Amundsen and Scott to the South pole. Informative, tense and uncommonly blunt, author Huntford compares and contrasts the attitudes and preperations between the two parties with considerable skill. The final chapters of this book are engrossing, and expect to be up late finishing this book. A must read for fans of Polar exploration, and a highly recomended book for anyone in a leadership postion, be it business or field work.

I read this book years ago when it was published as "Scott and Amundsen". It was a great book, a great story, and I cannot imagine that I let it go!
