I agree with CBC Arts Online that "The Library at Night" is a
companion volume to the author's earlier book " A History of
Reading. I thought " A History of Reading" was a great book. This
volume was O.K. but the author wandered more and seemed less
focused.
There are, however, many interesting pieces of information in this
book which would be difficult to find elsewhere in a similar
context. I am not a scholar of literature and therefore I sometimes
found the people the author is talking about are not known to me or
my knowledge of them is quite limited. To get the most out of this
book, you may want other sources of information available to you.
Even with those difficulties I found the book very interesting and
thought provoking. The need and importance of libraries is still an
important issue but to many of us, it is a dry subject. Alberta
Manguel has written an interesting book to get us thinking about
the importance of libraries in history and the modern age.
