The Lovely Bones: A Novel

by Alice Sebold
As told by: Alice Sebold

Little, Brown And Company | September 1, 2006 | Mass Market Paperbound

When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn''t happen. In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief, her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor and begin the difficult process of healing. In the hands of a brilliant novelist, this story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.

    Beautifully Written, Page-Turning Mystery

I am not sure quite why but this year my favourite fiction books have all been by first-time writers. When I first read the synopsis of this book – a young girl is raped and murdered by a serial killer – I said to myself, "This is not for me." Fortunately, I was on an airplane and this book was the only one in my briefcase. This tour de force is like nothing you would imagine. It is compelling, beautifully written and a page-turning mystery. After you read it you will want to recommend it to everyone.

A deeply moving story that captures the essence of love and family. It is a story about a family's struggle after a tragedy and their quest for inner peace, about the love between a father and daughter, and the tie that binds siblings together. It is well written and I recommend it to everyone.

I just finished reading this book for the first time and I can't really even put into words how it made me feel. It's a heartfelt story told almost as a memoire by a murdered young girl as she looks down on earth from heaven. This book will tug at your heard strings as you follow her family (along with other people in her life) and watch them deal, each in their own way, with her death. It's beautifully written and will captivate you from the first page.

Honestly, there are no words. This is one of those novels that can't really be categorized--my favourite type. It's a mystery, but reads sort of like a memoir, and there's the whole fantastical element.... It's for young adults but it's not, it's for adults but it's narrated by a 14-year-old.... It's stunning. It's incredible. I can't believe I didn't read it sooner.
