The Lovely Bones

by Alice Sebold

Little, Brown And Company | October 1, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book -- a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her -- her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

The major motion picture version of THE LOVELY BONES, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Saoirse Ronan is scheduled for release on December 11, 2009.

    Not What I Expected

Any parent will find a book or movie about children being harmed more disturbing than someone without kids. I found the first chapter of this book to be extremely disturbing and difficult to get through. Beyond that I found the book enjoyable, though it did tend to go in a direction I wasn't expecting. I was fine with that. Some of the other reviews I've read have expressed disappointment with the (arguably) less than satisfactory ending. I for one was pleased that the ending was not as predictable as it is in most books of this type. I was fortunate to get the entire book read before I saw the movie, which was a complete letdown. So much of the heart and soul of the book was left out of the film, and I was really disappointed with Peter Jackson's vision. If you want to enjoy this story, stick to the book.

    Terribly Disappointing

I chose to read this book because the movie was about to hit the theatre and there was an excess amount of "hype" surrounding it. I know a lot of people who did not like the movie and I had no taste for it either, but for this scenario I preferred the movie to the book. That is saying a lot considering A) I never like movies better than novels and B) I thought the movie was terrible.

This book was a complete waste of time. I would easily sit this book atop my "worst reads" list. I had to PUSH myself to finish it (because I just can't leave a book unfinished) but I know many others who just couldn't be bothered to waste their time finishing.

I found the book boring, slow and while reading my mind continuously wandered to other things. I was in no way attached or interested in any of the characters and I felt the writing style was mediocre at best. Overall I was very disappointed in this book and would not recommend it to anyone.

The story starts off so horrible and painful but it ends up full of joy and beauty. It is a story about letting go and moving on. Once you start it you won"t be able to put it down. Its an unforgetable story.

Very easy to read.... the kind of book you polish off in a day or two. Too much about "the in-between" stuff, but the story on Earth was awesome. The movie is good too, but again too much of "the in-between".

    Tragic Story

    Jane Salsman

Unfortunately this is something that happens in our society far too often. Men, women, and children go missing every day and experience unspeakable things at the hands of MONSTERS. Until the justice systems deals harshly with these austricities they will continue. Child moslesters recieve a slap on the hand for the damage they do to children and are let go on the streets to reoffend again.
Alice Sebold has captured the essence the horrorific of the deeds done by so for these abusers/murders. Hats of to you Alice.
Maybe someday we will all be able to walk freely on our streets without fear of these sick psycopaths.

At the beginning I loved the book. But for some reason, I could not get into it enough to finish it. It was good but I gave up on it. I usually do not stop reading books once I start but this time I just gave up and watched the movie. The parts I read were excellent, maybe one day I will finish it.

    Lovely Book

The Lovely Bones is based on a young girl’s view of how her family copes with her death. In a realm between heaven and earth, it was very interesting to see someone’s perspective after suffering through such a horrible experience. Suzie is portrayed in the book as a ghost who watches her parents’ lives change after she is brutally raped and murdered. Her father suspects their neighbour of killing their daughter but is unable to do anything or get anywhere without having any proof. This book was very descriptive and really showed us the emotional rollercoaster that Suzie was experiencing while trying to determine what happened to her. I truly commend the author on a well written best seller.

    Epic Fail

What a sad failure of a book. Up until the middle of the book it looked like it had great potential, then in the middle, it went straight downhill. ***spoiler***The main character does not get any satisfying type of revenge on the killer, and neither does her family. The mom who abandons her family is a pathetic loser. Some parts are ok or funny. The aunt is pretty cool. The main character is pretty cool, but there is really no plot at all except for the "emotional growth", if you could even call it that, of the characters. There was so much potential with this book - interesting characters who are poorly or not at all developed (ie Mrs Singh, the father, the aunt, the sister, Ray, the policeman), a very interesting exposition which could have led in many more interesting directions. After the first half of the book you pretty much just wish for it to be over with already or for something interesting to happen. They don't even solve the crime for god's sake!! This book was very irritating and I can only recommend it if you like to throw away your time thinking about "bittersweet endings" with no real resolution to the plot.

Very good book. It was a very emotional family based book. Um, I don't really know what to say. The movie was better than the book. It made me cry. Seeing other people cry always touches me.

Lovely Bones is a fabulous story! I loved the epic portrayal of this young girl and her life beyond life.

This book was a quick easy read. The subject matter is not light but the way the story is told, it doesn't get depressing or hard to handle. I found it to be a nice way to depict what it is to grieve and move on after a tragic life experience. I also found it comforting to think that those whom we loved and lost can be with us.

Not normally the type of book I would read, but was captured by the story. Imaginative, creative and at times painful, it was a great read.

All the excitment is in the beginning of this book and then it just keeps dragging out. I didn't put the book down wanting to know who would be the one to discover the clues to the crime. I was very disappointed with the results and maybe the next novel Alice Sebold writes will be better.

Oh my gosh, I completely agree. Everyone I know who has read this book told me how great it was. I started reading and the beginning was really interesting. But then the book just went on, and on, and on about nothing. Then there wasn't even any kind of closure in the end.

I am still trying to decide whether I really liked this book or not. It was interesting and insightful (a new version of Heaven I hadn't heard before) but it was a little slow. There are a lot of questions left unanswered as well. Some closure would have been nice. I did enjoy reading it but I finished it and felt that it was a little lacking.

I find it drags a bit, it starts off strong with Susie's horrible murder, but slows down way to much until over halfway through the book.

This is the first book by Alice Sebold that I have read. I must admit that every time I picked up the book, after reading for a few minutes I would be in tears. It is a very heartfelt, unimaginably tragic story. Would read her again in a minute. I will not see the move though as usually it ruins the book.

I enjoyed the book -- although there were some parts of it that I thought were a little bizarre. Overall I found the story line to be well written and interesting. It is definately a good read.
Don't think I'll see the movie though, it'll probably ruin the memories of the book!

I liked this book alot, but did find that some parts were a little "different". For the most part, it was an excellent, easy read. Also, like most books, it was much more interesting than the movie! (I read the book first)
