The Lovely Bones

by Alice Sebold

Little, Brown And Company | October 1, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book -- a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her -- her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

The major motion picture version of THE LOVELY BONES, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Saoirse Ronan is scheduled for release on December 11, 2009.

    Not What I Expected

Any parent will find a book or movie about children being harmed more disturbing than someone without kids. I found the first chapter of this book to be extremely disturbing and difficult to get through. Beyond that I found the book enjoyable, though it did tend to go in a direction I wasn't expecting. I was fine with that. Some of the other reviews I've read have expressed disappointment with the (arguably) less than satisfactory ending. I for one was pleased that the ending was not as predictable as it is in most books of this type. I was fortunate to get the entire book read before I saw the movie, which was a complete letdown. So much of the heart and soul of the book was left out of the film, and I was really disappointed with Peter Jackson's vision. If you want to enjoy this story, stick to the book.

    Terribly Disappointing

I chose to read this book because the movie was about to hit the theatre and there was an excess amount of "hype" surrounding it. I know a lot of people who did not like the movie and I had no taste for it either, but for this scenario I preferred the movie to the book. That is saying a lot considering A) I never like movies better than novels and B) I thought the movie was terrible.

This book was a complete waste of time. I would easily sit this book atop my "worst reads" list. I had to PUSH myself to finish it (because I just can't leave a book unfinished) but I know many others who just couldn't be bothered to waste their time finishing.

I found the book boring, slow and while reading my mind continuously wandered to other things. I was in no way attached or interested in any of the characters and I felt the writing style was mediocre at best. Overall I was very disappointed in this book and would not recommend it to anyone.

The story starts off so horrible and painful but it ends up full of joy and beauty. It is a story about letting go and moving on. Once you start it you won"t be able to put it down. Its an unforgetable story.

I enjoyed the book -- although there were some parts of it that I thought were a little bizarre. Overall I found the story line to be well written and interesting. It is definately a good read.
Don't think I'll see the movie though, it'll probably ruin the memories of the book!
