I thoguht this book was sooooo good. It took me a while to get into it, but after the first couple of chapter, i really started to enjoy it. I'm guessing a lot of people know what the book is a about, so ill skip the summary. But the book was a cold hard truth of what happens after someone in your family is murdered! At the outset I was a little disturbed, thinking oh, no...not another story of tragedy...don't we hear enough of it in the 'real world'! However, I've never read anything like this -- I'm more used to Grisham and O'Shaugnessy, Sheldon. It taps deep into the subconscious; after reading it, I looked at life in a different light...there are indeed more important things in life -- the simple things. Great read! I’ve read books to fill in my spare time, I have read books that I love and would read over again and again, I have read books that keep me wanting to read more but this book was different I have never read something that actually made me put the book down because I thought I was going to be sick, I am not saying the book is bad…it was excellent!! the book was shocking and tragic but came to a point where verything just let go and you feel like these people are alive as you are reading. its hard to explain waht the book invokes on you i cried and laughed i think the auther really touched on something. my attentione was captured write from the first line.it was captivating and heartwrenching i loved it so much i couldnt put it down

If you are expecting a warped mystery where the ghost-girl helps her family find the killer, don't. The story strays away from the cliche spiritual/gothic plotline to something with more heart. Susie captures the heart as easily as she watches her family from heaven go through their various problems as they cope with her death. Although this book is well-written and intelligently presented, and the concept is interesting, I found the underlying themes to be "Walt-Disney-esque" and lacking in truth or depth. Having read this novel, I can see what all the fuss is about. This novel captured me at the outset and was a thoroughly enjoyable, albeit tragic read. The 'in-between' world was a bit far-fetched, but the extremely unique narrative was a welcomed change and an interesting vantage. + read more

disappointing

I think the story was promising but it didn't turn out very good. It took a very long time to pan out and some parts of it just were unnecessary and ruined the flow. I also found that some parts were very jumpy and I still don't think I know what happend at those times. I really liked the idea of it being told from Suzie's point of view and I love the way it ended but it was just not enough to make the read worthwhile.

I found this book to be an amazing read. I love Susy Salmon and her personality. The author takes something so sad and makes the reader feel for all the characters and their loss and at the same time falling in love with Susy. You just need to keep reading to know what happens as well as waiting for justice for the neighbor. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as well!!!

Best Book I have EVER read

I happened to walk by this book in Chapters when it first came out and it looked interesting. I borrowed it from the local library and absolutely LOVED it. Now I've bought a copy and am going to read it for a second time. IT'S THAT GOOD! Plus, it's one of Heather's Picks, so if you don't love it, you can return it for a full refund.

i loved reading every word of it, although it felt a little slow at times, and i think that in itself makes for a great book. there were times where it was just too sad to even want to read on, but the intensity and the way the author made you hooked on the character stopped the urge. but what i especially loved was that in all its sad moments, there was a hidden joy, that you could only discover when you finished it.

So Glad I'm Done Reading This!

I bought the Lovely Bones because I had seen the trailer for the movie. It looked interesting enough to read and the idea was a new topic for me to read about. After having read past Suzie's rape and murder, the book never seemed to pick up after that. It felt as if the story went on about nothing and just when you think it is gonna good - it doesn't! Then it ends without any closure. Also, I thought the whole last bit at the end, where setting takes place in the future, seemed really pointless… + read more

I do not wish people suffering, but for those who said rude words towards this book, I do not wish you well (yes, quote from a Kelly Clarkson Song! Love her!). This book made me sad, happy, and believe in heaven, that there really is a place after death. This book carries a strong message to girls of all ages, and families who have lost one of their kin. I have experienced neither horrors, but I have a hunch of what it feels like, and towards the film, I await it with open arms!

Best Book of '09

If you can stomach through the first chapter of the book, that doesn't got into extreme detail but enough that it causes your stomach to churn, you'll be pulled into a beautiful tale. I've never read a book that held both hopeless and hope at the same time. You want revenge yet somehow through the journey that gets shuffled aside from the stories of how those left behind are dealing with the lose. Everything about this book felt real.
