The Night Drifter: A Novel

The Night Drifter: A Novel

by Susan Carroll

Random House Publishing Group | February 1, 2000 | Mass Market Paperbound

The eldest son and heir to Castle Leger, Lance St. Leger is plagued by an infernal restlessness that cannot be appeased, perhaps because the family legacy of strange powers is most pronounced in Lance''s own dubious gift. He calls it night drifting--his ability to spirit into the night while his body remains behind. And it is on one wild night that he finds Rosalind, a young, sheltered widow who mistakes Lance''s "drifting" soul for the ghost of Sir Lancelot. Lance teases and tempts her, fills her with a yearning her chivalrous phantom knight cannot satisfy. But in this place imbued with both true love and otherworldly magic, a new dire portent vows to come full circle. As a murderous enemy challenges the St. Leger power, Rosalind must tempt magic herself to save her beloved from the cold depths of eternal damnation.

This is the first book I read by Carroll and I loved it! The magic is not overplayed and it adds to the romance. There's delightful surprises throughout. I often found myself with a wide grin on my face while reading!

The next chapter in the story begun in Bride Finder focuses on Anatole's twin sons. One embraces his mystical heritage, but the other - our hero - is skeptical of the family legends. The author has built on this romantic story of a love destined to survive all. We get much better character development, along with great suspense and emotion. It's heart-warming and gut-wrenching all at once. Definitely worth the read. Carroll is an author to be watched.

This is the second book on the St. Leger family, following Bride Finder. We meet Lancelot St. Leger, who has inherited a frightening ability from his family's strange powers. Lance can night drift. He can separate his soul from his body and "drift while flesh and bone are left behind." After losing the family's most precious heirloom, the St. Leger sword, Lance finds himself mistaken for the ghost of Sir Lancelot by Rosalind, a lovely widow who is searching for Camelot.

If you have anything to do before you plan to read this book, better make sure it's done before you crack it open to the first page. I couldn't put it down. An enthralling story that will have you racing to the end , for a surprise ending that will leave you laughing out loud.
    Happy reading.
