Rape Of Nanking

by Iris Chang

Penguin Books USA | November 15, 1998 | Trade Paperback

In December 1937, the Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking. Within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered -- a death toll exceeding that of the atomic blasts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Using extensive interviews with survivors and newly discovered documents, Iris Chang has written what will surely be the definitive history of this horrifying episode.

The Rape of Nanking tells the story from three perspectives: of the Japanese soldiers who performed it, of the Chinese civilians who endured it, and of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved almost 300,000 Chinese. Among these was the Nazi John Rabe, an unlikely hero whom Chang calls the "Oskar Schindler of China" and who worked tirelessly to protect the innocent and publicize the horror. More than just narrating the details of an orgy of violence, The Rape of Nanking analyzes the militaristic culture that fostered in the Japanese soldiers a total disregard for human life. Finally, it tells the appalling story: about how the advent of the Cold War led to a concerted effort on the part of the West and even the Chinese to stifle open discussion of this atrocity. Indeed, Chang characterizes this conspiracy of silence, that persists to this day, as "a second rape".

    An Unforgettable Read

Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking" is a beautifully written book that shocks the reader with unfathomable degrees of torture and atrocities that were committed against innocent men, women, and children. This book both angered and saddened me, yet I am above all, shocked at the blatant denial of Japanese scholars and historians who continue to distort history despite the remarkable evidence that exists that the massacre took place during World War II. Every Chinese should read this book and never forget this part of Chinese history.

    A tribute to Iris

To be very honest, Iris is not moderate, however, only by writing the way she did can she arouse the public awareness that was lacking in both the East and the West. Poor Iris over burdened herself and tried to bridge the immense cultural gap using her American sense of justice. On one hand, she received death threats and ridicules, on the other, the Chinese inertia did not provide her the support from the people she meant to defend. Her suicide have become a tragedy for the Chinese, while it also become material of vulgar jokes for others.

Shame on all. She should have lived.

    a very important book

Very interesting, and a very easy read. Chang's anger is felt in every word of this book which sometimes forces her to say things that go a little overboard. She also has some historical facts wrong - for example, she places the Tokugawa rulers in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries (Pg 21) when they actually ruled from 1603-1867. But, fortunately, these trivial concerns are overshadowed by her exhaustive research, passion for the topic, and great insight into the causes of Japanese enmity towards the Chinese. Highly recommended

This book was amazing. Every Chinese and Non-Chinese should read this book. I was not aware of this event, and after reading this, it gave me a whole perspective on outcomes of war.

The book was so stunning that I was not able to finish reading. Alike the Holocaust, we must never pretend that it never happened.

I've read many books that dealt with war , but I never expected what I read between the covers of (THE RAPE OF NANKING.)
Iris Chang has released to us a human disaster that has been hidden for too long.
It is not hard for me as an ethnic to wonder why western nations ignore such tragedies.
Any student of history must read this book. It is a masterpiece, which details just a fragment of the suffering the Chinese people have had to endure throughout there history. It's a shame it was so long in the making.
Thank you Iris Chang for giving us a book that will always be imbeded in my thoughts.

I think the book should be read by all Chinese people. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. We will never forget the Nanking Holocause or forgive the Japanese until they demonstrate the most sincere remorse.

The horrors that Chang reveals in this novel must become known to everyone. What happened in Nanking during the WWII is beyond all comprehension. If you think you can handle the horror and indecency that I shudder to think exists in people, then I urge you to read this novel, then pass it on to a friend because this is a story that needs to be told over and over.

An excellent book that reveals the attrocities committed by the Japanese against the Chinese in their genocidal pursuit of ethnic cleansing. It is an eye opener for the world and also serves as a another reminder that there are still lessons to be learn from one of the most tragic chapters of human existence "Man's inhumanity to man".

The true and horrific story of the rape of Nanking by the Japanese army in 1937-38. The Western world has focused on the European Holocaust, but equally deplorable tragedies unfolded in the East. The book covers the lead-up to Nanking, the occupation itself and the subsequent Japanese cover-up. Ms. Chang argues persuasively that the Japanese, unlike the Germans, have never apologized or accepted responsibility for their treatment of combatants and civilians in World War II. While one in 20 American POWs died if held by the Germans, one in three died at the hands of their Japanese captors. U.S. preoccupation with the Cold War and containing China and Russia after the war led to their unwillingness to give any publicity to the crimes committed against China in Nanking and elsewhere.
